Gentlemen, when I speak of keeping the current coach but under or along with a committee of vatani coaches for the World Cup, I am not speaking of it being an ideal situation. Rather out of despiration of the situation we are in. Otherwise, if it was a year or two ago and we could afford hiring a top-notch coach, I would be more persuasive. The time period would have afforded the new coach enough time to acclamate himself to the country/team and visa versa. I would have loved for CQ to stay and retire there as a result of institutionalising a few things .

Faramarz jAn -

Thanks for the fixes and updates.  Yes, the design was mine. Although not an artist or art major, but glad to know it is liked.  In fact, did it for WC2018 but never uploaded here.

Keefer jAn - Okay, your complements [smile](thanks!) forced me to spend another attosecond with friends!

Shahryar jAn -

My bad! I had mistaken Austria for Australia in your list! I guess late nights put too much strain on the eye-sights as well as dead brain cells typically taking years to regenerate in the ages that we are!

Regarding Ukraine and Poland - I mentioned them because of their chances from the UEFA playoff pairings they drew.   Ukraine was drawn to play Scotland.  Scotland was very lucky to be in a weak group (Denmark, Israel, Austria, Faroe Islands, and Moldova) and ended in 2nd place and Austria in 4th.  Final standing in this group (F) was as:
1. Denmark (27pts)
2. Scotland (23pts)
3. Israel (16pts) - more goals scored
4. Austria (16pts)
etc...
More on Austria in a bit. Ukraine, 2nd in group D, had to face France, Finland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kazakhstan. A much tougher group compared to F.  This gives Ukraine an edge over Scotland.  Given Ukraine wins, they will face the winner of Wales/Austria. Wales will definitely win this one as Austria (and Czech Republic) advanced to the play-offs as one of the best two Nations League group winners outside top two of their qualifying group. Wales did not do well in their semi-weak group either, thus, Ukraine has an edge on Wales and advance to WC.

Sweden, on the other hand, has much tougher games to advance as they have to first pass Czech Republic (another Canada like these days) and then face the winner of Russian/Poland.  There is bad blood between the two due to recent political tensions (Poland a NATO ally and Russian foe).  In short, this Path B matches will be very interesting. At the moment, Poland seems to have the edge than the other three.

Finally,

CQ built a long lasting foundation for us; however and unfortunately, like most things we, Iranians, do and are great at is to quickly destroy all the good things out of jealousy, greed, shortsightedness, double-standards, and above all, mismanagement.  That is why our home-grown coaches will "never" be successful, not now and not in a century from now.  They are bare bone and flat too lazy and do not want or like change. Current TM coach has good abilities and intentions but not seasoned enough for this stage.  He is learning and growing "fast" but will not be enough for this time around, even though we have a great team with greater potential to make it to next round.

Best,

DM...

Jametoon jam. From hezbollahi to yahoodi setiz to Amrikai setiz all here under one roof. Amazing how political views of the same bring everyone together.
DM, which group do you belong to? Hahaha.
Good to see you all. Still same views? Any changes? Shahryar any preference between China and Russia? :)
We came a long way with one IFP belly up and the other about to get there.
Ali are you the old Ali. P? :):):)
Keep it up, but the world has changed since 25 years ago. Ahmadinejad changed and you have not. Lol.

Shahryar jAn, I am sorry for my pessimism. It is difficult for me as well because I am usually much more positive about TM than I have been this time. This is surprising to me as well because we do have players who have had much much more experience at the highest level internationally before. I think this is because we have seen how organized we can be and as a team go up against the strongest teams in the world. And now, on the heals of that we se a total disarray and a pickup game style day in and day out. I do need you guys to keep me more upbeat.

By the way, I also do not hold much stock in our homegrown coaches. Our league is not strong enough for strategy and good coaching to make a difference and so, the vatani coaches are mostly green as to the tactics and strategies that could be employed.

As for emails, I am sorry I have missed any. I just noticed that the email address listed up on the page is defunct. Let me update that and I would then appreciate forwarding the emails from July. Merci for pointing that out!

Desert Man, Good to see you.

I did state earlier that it is possible for us to be in Pot-3 and still do well, as we did 4 years ago. Being in Pot-2 statistically (at least on paper) gives us slightly better chance to go against weaker teams; although one can argue all 32 teams in their own right are very strong. That is why, it would be great to see you conduct the analytics/probability study of this to assess our chances; I would love to see it, if you find the time to run it.

The 13 European teams I listed below (in black fonts) are the ones I think will qualify. There are 10 that already qualified; I am predicting the last three teams to qualify from UEFA will be "Italy", Sweden" and "Austria" (not Wales as you noted). Although I personally would like to see "Wales" qualify instead of "Austria".

You are picking Ukraine over Austria/Wales..; it is of course possible. I usually root for the underdogs; being IRAN fan, you have to :)))

You are also picking Poland over Sweden. Again, possible, but less likely. I saw couple of games by both teams. The Poland team I saw seemed very disoriented; and without much plan for the game. Maybe he is taking a page from Iran's coach, lol.

I think we have historically done well against African and CONCACAF teams; in general of course. So I like our chances against them. Some European countries with less experience like Wales for example, have not seen Iran's style of play and maybe concurred by us..., IF we had a goof coach!

Faramarz,

I wish I could disagree with you on your pessimism and had grounds to prove them, but I think you are right. The current coach will not take us there; I do not see him as a motivator; someone that can add value. Someone who can add 2 + 2 and 6 out of it..., if you know what I mean.

I am not really confident about any of out home-grown coaches either. we simply are not there; we have not played in the big Leagues and do not understand the nuances of the game; not  the way Europeans understand it.

Can this coach get us to Pot-2? can he help us advance to the knockout stage? Maybe...., I don't know; maybe.

Ba Salam Garm be DoustAn Aziz...  It has been a long time but a few femtoseconds at hand to spare with AzizAn...

Shahryar jAn and respective friends -

Being in Pot 2 or 3 really does not makes that much of a difference, especially, for us.  The entire idea of Pot 2 was to avoid having two UEFA teams in our group; however, looking at the strong teams who have/or will soon qualify from CAF, CONCACAF (Canada is turning heads!), and CONMEBOL, our chances of having an easier group (to some degree ~8-10% less) is to be in Pot 3 instead of 2.  If I had time I would have ran an analytics/probability study of this to asses the idea in-depth, but unfortunately time doesn't allow it at this time.  By the way, there are actually 13 UEFA teams not 12. Additionally, it is highly likely that Ukraine and Poland will make it instead of Sweden and Wales (missing from your list).

Assuming we end in Pot 3 and some EmdAdhAye Ghaibi on our side, getting one of Netherlands, Switzerland, or Denmark from Pot 2 and one of Canada/Costa Rica, Tunisia (if they make it), or Ecuador from Pot 4, we should have a good chances making it to next round.

Faramarz jAn - Try to respond to Admin emails, especially from late
last July time-frame!  You keep missing opportunities...  By the way, it is times to change website's header picture!  It is so outdated! How about this!

Ali jAn - China and Russian are on a course and trajectory headed for a new order that heavily involves Pacific East region.  The Zone has become completely militarized and several European countries and US are pressuring Australia to be their next Middle East Station in order to compete for resources&confront both China and Russia.  In a decade or so, Middle East will be Iran, Turkey, Egypt, and S.A. playground and turf with China and Russian as on lookers while draining the resources from mentioned countries without military intervention.  Best and most efficient way they have played their cards in past 87 years.

Best,

DM...

Keefer,

I am not that optimistic either, due to lack of proper leadership this year. CQ got us as close to advancing to the next stage as anyone in our history. Let's see; we were one "good" call away from drawing against Spain, and I am talking about couple of centimeters, if that. By all accounts, that should have been a tie game, giving us 5 points, tied with Spain on points and in second place due to goals scored, advancing to the knockout stage.

In my hypothetical grouping below, I actually like our chances, both against Mexico and Egypt. As for Mexico, we already faced them once at their peak in another WC and lost. This year may be different; they are only a mere shadow of themselves.

And against, Egypt and CQ; of well, I think we can handle them fine : )

"I am convinced that if we had CQ as coach this year, our chance of advancing would have greatly increased."

Totally agree with this.

"I'd say that realistically, our chance of finishing in WC's top-16 teams is <20%."

I would say it is less than 5% with the current coach.

"First of all, I just checked the new ranking and IRAN lost one place, and we are now placed lower at the 22nd place."

I think by the time it is all said and done, we will lose a few more steps and Japan may catch up to us.

At best, we might win the game against Korea 1 zip.
The group you put us in, 4 WC, we might get lucky coming out 3rd. I have not seen how Egypt play but going against CQ team would not be pretty.
Overall, for obvious reasons, I am not optimistic. But you make it very interesting and I thank you for taking the time!
