See the interview if you get some time.

Political Animosity and EstrangementTHE ETHICIST One reflection of our country’s toxic partisanship is that families may now find dinner-table conversations about politics impossible. Yet if people can’t talk about the things that divide us with their families — where there’s a background assumption that you should try to stick together even when you disagree — you’ve got to wonder where they can. So I’d be inclined to have a go at talking to this fellow about his noxious opinions, letting him know what you think. If most of his political discussions are in the echo chamber of social media and on a right-wing radio station, you and your family may be the only fellow citizens of his who have a chance to make him consider other points of view. Supposing that he doesn’t respond reasonably — the likeliest outcome, no doubt — you can tell him that you’re breaking off with him, and he’ll know your reasons. But at least you’ll have treated him respectfully, both as someone you had a family connection with and as a fellow American citizen.

New Stanford research shows: And I’m paraphrasing here
Political disagreements are harder for Americans to bridge than racial or religious differences, according to a study co-authored by Stanford political scientist Shanto Iyengar. "The polarization of the American electorate has dramatically increased," said Iyengar, whose co-author was Sean Westwood, a post-doctoral researcher at Princeton University. "We show that the level of partisan animus in the American public exceeds racial hostility." Why? It is largely due to a witches' brew of political candidates relying on negative campaigning and partisan news sources serving up vitriolic commentary, according to Iyengar, the Harry and Norman Chandler Professor of Communication. The widening split, he said, is no longer just the Democrats vs. Republicans, but liberals vs. conservatives.

Comments: keefer,
What I have noticed recently (10 years or so) is the intensity of the discussions. It was always there but not at this extend. I have lived in this country for the past 40 years or so. It was never this bad. It might be the social media, it could be the economical issues that made people more sensitive. I am not sure but it is going in the wrong direction.

Zinski, you pointed to a very important reality of our lives today. The topic of politics in our daily life today, in most cases, creates animosity and separation among our families, friends and polarization of our societies in general with a simple expression of opinion. Why the urge to express, and side with issues? Could it be the need in us for recognition? Could it be that our personal lives are tied to the day's issues, hence participation in the discussions, thinking we can influence the people's decision making process for "better" solution? A lot of other factors, for the need in getting on the band wagon, can be described. Although the issue is also present in other societies, it is more prevalent amongst Iranians from way before as you know . You raised a good point.

Comments: I’m not sure when did it start but sometime in the past 10 years or so, every conversation turned into politics in this country. One can’t go anywhere or see/read anything that isn’t about right/left politics.
It has created a division like nothing I’ve seen before. Friends and families are enemies. Everyone is taking sides. News has become opinions. Movies, TV shows, sports and all the rest are infected by politics.
I’ve been avoiding it as much as I can but there are no safe places. No matter where you are, real world or cyber, you can’t fully avoid it. It’s making the world much smaller and people more isolated, sad and angry.
