Comments: Agha Zinsky khosh begzare. On my recent trip, my experience with a cell phone was the same as Zinsky describes. I have a phone in Iran which I registered the last trip I was there and used it. But left it in Iran for future use. At the airport no one asked for my cell phone. Well said about "come here and see if you can help." No one there gives a shit about the outside or the fights there.
Comments: On the subject of infighting between different groups, I see much less of that here. Iranians aboard have bad attitude towards each other. All this fighting between this group and the other one is even more silly now that I’m here. People have other serious issues to deal with. No one, and I mean no one gives a rats ass about what we think in US or other countries around the world. We are sitting thousands of miles away fighting amongst ourselves about what is the best system for Iran. Talk is cheap. Come over here, see the pain and do your best to help. Otherwise, just live your American life and enjoy.

Comments: I wish I had the answers. As far as names on the passport and ticket, it might be a good idea to check with the airline as well. They might have a better understanding of the situation. My wife has her maiden name and my last name on the US passport. Her maiden name is the only one on the Iranian passport. I used all names (hers and mine) on the ticket and had no problem. As far as cell phone. I brought an old one to use here and I’m planning to leave it here. My cell from US was not used here (only via WiFi). Also, not staying more than a month. I’ve been traveling to Iran every couple of years and so far no one asked about my cell at the airport. The only thing I was told is that if I want to stay over a month, I need to register my cell with the SIM card, otherwise my service will be cancelled. I can’t be sure about any of these as it might depend on various rules being enforced or not. Better safe than sorry. Call the airline, the embassy and hopefully they can give you better information.

Comments: Agha Zinsky, one more question. I have heard that if you are staying in Iran for more than a month you have to declare your phone in gomrok at the airport. But if you are staying there shorter time, this is not necessary. I am not staying more than a month and so, I am okay there. But I have been told that if I stay less than a month, all I need to do to get my phone working is to register my existing sim card. I do not need a new one. Is this correct?

Comments: Shit. The only thing I have that shows her maiden name is her passport. Marriage certificate is from Iran and Farsi. 
Comments: Aagha Reza. As long as you have proof that connects her maiden name to yours like marriage certificate it should work. This is very common also in the United States. Should be no issues.
Comments: Reza jAn, I haven't gone back in a long while either, but I think your wife will not be allowed to board the plane here. The reason is that if an airline carries a passenger to a country where s/he does not have permission to enter, the airline is responsible to take the passenger back to the origin of the trip. So, airlines check at the beginning of the trip to make sure you have documentation for entry into the destination. Your wife can present the Iranian passport but then the last name on the passport and the ticket will not match. Unless I misunderstood the situation, and unless the rules have changed since some 15 years ago, they might prevent her from boarding. I am sorry for the bad news. But may be things have changed since then. Other people may have more recent information.

Comments: Zinski jan, if you do not mind a second question. My wife took my last name in america but her last name in her other passport is still her original last name. I have made the mistake of buying her ticket only with her last name in the US. But am being told that this will cause problems. I am freaking out about this a bit since I will be heading out in about 10 days. Does anyone here have any experience with this? Do I need to ask to change her name on the ticket?
Comments: Thank you Zinsky. Do you have to have the new kart meli? Mine is the old one. I have not gone to Iran in ages. It is crazy they make you have kart meli for everything. I have a passport, shenasname, and now a kart meli. It looks like I have to take them everywhere I go. |
