Farid-LA,

I realize it is so hard to think about games at this time, because we are all so emotional abut this. But this is no different than the hardship we all feel throughout our lives and have to bounce back.

Keep in mind that in time, this feeling will subside. If you want to throw your hat in the ring again and make your predictions for today's single game, feel free to do so. In case you change your mind in the future, this way you would not miss out on anything. Later ,if you still feel the same, you can stop.

Besides, some of us want to see what your prediction is so we can copy it, lol

Having said that, I do not want to push you to continue predicting because when the fun is gone, the point of the competition is also gone. I will force myself to continue in the prediction contest hoping for this sense of betrayal to go away.

But I hope that you stick around and participate in some of the discussions on sports topics.

Farid-LA,

Thank you for participating in the contest and congratulations once again, great come back taking the championship.

For what is worth, you are not alone in feeling like this. We all feel it. FIFA did this out of whatever deranged reasons they had, and you are correct, it took the joy and the spirit out of the sport, which for so long brought people together.

I understand if you do not wish to continue with the contest, it is hard for me to do so also.

Best of luck to you, and remember this will not be the end of it. There will be a day they have to hear us.

Farid-LA congratulations. Really well done. You blew everyone away in the last few days! And, that includes lol and his almighty!!

As for the rest of the way, I feel the same way. We watch these games because we have a sense that they are fair competitions and so, it becomes fun to see who comes out on top. But when you so strongly suspect that the outcome is not decided on the field, all the excitement is gone. I watched as many games as I could even during the trip until yesterday. Yesterday, I did not watch a single game. Fuck it all man! Not letting them stay in the country was such a low and loser thing to do.

Thank you for all your hard work, Shahryar Khan. I no longer have any interest or energy to continue with the prediction. Shame on FIFA for treating TM so unfairly. It destroyed the spirit of the game. Good luck to all!

Iran’s World Cup Elimination Shows Offside Law Must Change33

Egypt v IR Iran: Group G - FIFA World Cup 2026

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - JUNE 26: Egypt players react as referee Szymon Marciniak calls an offside violation and overturns the goal by Shoja Khalilzadeh #4 of IR Iran during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G match between Egypt and IR Iran at Seattle Stadium on June 26, 2026 in Seattle, Washington.

You can blame the travel restrictions and other adversity that the U.S. government placed on Iran during a World Cup that coincided with armed conflict between the two nations.

You can blame Austria and Algeria for taking an extremely unexpected route to an expected draw that sent both teams through to the last 32 at Iran's expense.

But the biggest single culprit in Iran's failure to advance to the knockout phase is a weird idiosyncracy to the offside law that has long outlived its usefulness.

A Winner That Wasn't

In case you missed it, Iran briefly believed they had won their Group G finale and sealed their last 32 spot with a second-place finish when Shoja Khalilzadeh slammed a loose ball into the back of the Egyptian net during a goal mouth scramble.

It took minutes before match officials – with the help of semi-automated offside technology – sorted out that Khalilzadeh had been offside on the play by less than the length of his foot.

But the reason Khalilzadeh was offside was because of a technicality in how the law is written, confusing many real-time observers and, during the run of play at least, possibly Khalilzadeh himself.

Here is how the text of the offside law defines an offside position:

A player is in an offside position if:

Any part of the head, body or feet is in the opponents' half (excluding the halfway line), and …

Any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.

In this particular case, Khalilzadeh was ruled offside because goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir had come to punch clear a ball into the penalty area and failed. And in the process, he moved off his line far enough that he accounted for neither of the last two defenders.

As a result, when Khalilzadeh received te ball, he was technically behind the second-to-last defender, even though you can tell watching replays that he was using the deepest non-goalkeeper as his reference point for staying inside.

Is This Really The Point?

The essential purpose off the offside law is to prevent attackers from what kids on the playground would call "cherrypicking," standing deep in the opponents' end to be ready when their team wins the ball back and can play a long pass.

But in the modern game, where goalkeepers are very clearly differentiated from field players, asking attackers to account for goalkeepers when managing their onside status is neither in line with the law's intention nor realistic.

Goalkeepers are required to wear different colors from field players, making them more difficult to account for even if an opposition player is trying. They are of course allowed to use their hands when trying to play the ball. Unofficially, they are often afforded extra protection by match officials, particularly while inside their penalty areas.

Iran needed help to save their ‘disaster’ World Cup. Instead they got more heartbreak

And most to the point, on no level is it common for goalkeepers to venture forward beyond any attacking player, no matter how advanced that attacking player may be. Even sweeper keepers typically stand at the edge of their penalty areas or just beyond, during circumstances when their back line might be tethered near midfield and the ball is in the opponents' half.

When a goalkeeper has played himself into a position where he is no longer among the last two defenders, the cause is typically a sudden, reactionary play on the ball. If an offensive player finds himself in an offside position following such a play, it is usually because the goalkeeper misplayed the sequence.

In such scenarios, placing the burden of awareness of the goalkeeper's position on the attacking player as it relates to remaining onside is unrealistic and unfair.

An Easy Fix

The most frustrating part is that, while this is a rarely occurring situation, it is far easier to fix than other conversations legalities that continue to plague the game.

Questions over what makes a penalizable handball, when to play the advantage law, and whether using machines to decide a law written with human eyes in mind all have far more gray area than a potential rewrite to the offside law that would exonerate Khalilzadeh.

The simplest fix is for IFAB to simply re-write the law to stipulate a single last defender, while differentiating a goalkeeper from a defender. Other ideas posed include wiping out offside calls entirely once a team has gained the penalty area, a change that would make the law kind of similar to offside decisions in ice hockey.

Regardless, this much is clear:

By the letter of the law, Khalilzadeh was offside. By its spirit, he and his Iran teammates got a raw deal and don't deserve to be one of the 16 teams heading home early.

Overall, Farid-LA finished on top and is our Group-Stage Champion; congratulations [thumb]

LOL and Perspectives! finished tied for the 2nd place, Congratulations are in order as well [wave]

Daryuish finished in fourth spot, followed by Hamvatan and Zinsky in 5th and 6th spots respectively.

Congratulations to all participants. It was not easy for us to do this, but this was our respect and honor to the game and to our beloved TM, who frankly deserved a lot better treatment that they received in this World Cup, from FIFA, the referees, and from the host country.

To be honest I am a lot less excited about the prediction contest. I am not sure why. We did not start this because of Iran's games. May be this will changes in time!

To finish what we started, here is my prediction:

South Africa 2 - 2 Canada

Will go to PKs and South Africa will win.

Shahryar jAn, you are a good man. Rest and get well my friend.

Yesterday was a huge roller coaster with every game. I will post my thoughts about the team's performance on the pitch later, when I am less emotional.

Right now, I feel most sorry for the players. They really poured their heart into this tournament and did not leave anything on the field. With all the adversary, lack of preparation, hostile political environment that did not even allow them to stay in the country they played in, no facilities, no recovery, spending all their time on traveling, they still produced the most respectable record in out football history. No losses, and putting out a decent performance against a giant like Belgium, and a good team like Egypt, scoring more goals than allowed in every game, and force FIFA to scoop as low as bogus offside calls to take away three wins, two of which had clearly malicious offside calls against them.

I could not be more proud of these players and everything that they accomplished. To me, given the circumstances, it feels like they won the world cup. I appreciate them that much.

FIFA DESTROYED Iran's World Cup Dream with The Worst VAR Call Ever!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEMTRevlu9U

The comments are very telling. There are even accusations of AI having generated the image with the shoe sticking out and not being real. This is how pissed people (mostly noniranians) are. I think the backdrop of corruption in FIFA and what US did to this team has a lot to do with how strongly people are coming out against this from all over the world. I am not sure what the solution is but this is fucking crazy!

As the song says, “let it be”!
Everything that could go wrong, went wrong for TM! It was very hard to watch the players, coaches and the fans doing the impossible under the worst circumstances and still…
For what it worth, it was exciting, frustrating and very unfair.
Mr prediction is that South African and Canada go for 120 minutes 2-2. Canada wins in PK.

Agha Shahryar - Thank you for all the hard work and time you've invested in running and managing the predictions.

Just out of curiosity, and I could be wrong, were my predictions for today's games included? Compared to yesterday's table, the posted final table doesn't appear to reflect them.
