I have not fully figured out the format for the knockout stage yet, but the scoring remins the same as before, except there is a chance to gain an additional point if it goes to penalty and someone picks the correct enalty shootout.

For now, this is today's results and I will think about improvind it later this evening.

Gaining advantage! I suppose that was the case for Iran.
Being in an offside position is not an offense on its own. A player is only penalized if, at the exact moment the ball is played or touched by a teammate, they are involved in active play by:
Interfering with play: Touching or playing the ball passed by a teammate.
Interfering with an opponent: Obstructing a defender’s line of vision, challenging them for the ball, or preventing them from playing it.
Gaining an advantage: Playing a ball that rebounds off the goalpost, crossbar, or an opponent after being in an offside position .

I really need to get over it but …
Can someone find the offside rules that explain this scenario.
Plater A is offside when the ball is released but it doesn’t go to him. This player is not involved in the 1st pass/shot and doesn’t interfere in any way with the 1st touch. It hits a post or another defender or goalie and bounces to the player that WAS offside but is no longer offside after the bounce. Is that offside?

I don’t actually think Algeria and Austria planned the tie but up to 2-2 score line, they did play hard and seemed to be looking for a win. After that they decided to just slow down and keep the score. It became an extremely dull game. Without actually agreeing on it, it was agreed by both sides that a tie is perfect for them. For whatever reason, Algeria had a lucky break and scored. Right after that, Algeria could have just sit back and let the clock run out (less than 2 minutes) but somehow just stopped playing and let Austria score at the last few seconds! That looked pretty strange but as I said, I don’t believe it was decided beforehand!

I understand why they came up with offside rules when they did. I also understand they have been trying to make it more fair but in reality it’s a disaster. Rules are quite complicated and VAR can easily be abused if wanted. It’s never going to be perfect and that should be good enough. It can, however, be simple and effective.
VAR can easily be used to favor one team over another. If you change the angle by 1 degree, a toe or some other part could be offside or not. If you take that picture a millisecond before or after the ball is touched or released, it could change everything.
In my opinion if offside is questionable, it should not be called. It favors the offense of all teams and makes the game more exciting. If it is fully offside, no one would question it (I’m sure some always will but …).

You are welcome, LOL and it is my pleasure to provide something for my doostan and havatanan.

By the way, I really like your idea of no draws in group stages, I think it is ingenious.

I say in the future WCs there should not be any draws for group stage matches. If the game ends in a draw in 90 minutes they should go directly  to a penalty shootout and award the winner 2 points and the loser 1 point. That would eliminate any attempts to fix a game. It is more fair and exciting for the fans and the teams.

As the song says, “let it be”!
Everything that could go wrong, went wrong for TM! It was very hard to watch the players, coaches and the fans doing the impossible under the worst circumstances and still…
For what it worth, it was exciting, frustrating and very unfair.
Mr prediction is that South African and Canada go for 120 minutes 2-2. Canada wins in PK.

A big thank you and 'bacheha  motshakrim' to TM players and all the coaching staff. This bunch gave the fans the best showing of Iran in all WCs and have to be proud of themsleves despite all the obstacles they faced. They played a distinctly Iranian style of football under the direction of the General and gained a lot of respect from football fans all over the world.

And last but not least Ramin Rezaian has now become an Iranian football legend at the age of 36. He deserves to be in the best 11 of the group stage [biggrin]

Thank you agha Shahryar for organizing the prediciton contest. You have a great job.

Also thanks for posting the Forbes article about the offside rule. It basially says what I posted yesterday that the offside rule applied to Iran is BS and has to be changed. I think FIFA will change it in thier next congress and call it the "Iran Rule".

The other issue FIFA needs to address is the system with points for a draw and winning to avoid the problems we have seen before and we saw last night in the Ageria/Asuria match.

I say in the future WCs there should not be any draws for group stage matches. If the game ends in a draw in 90 minutes they should go directly  to a penalty shootout and award the winner 2 points and the loser 1 point. That would eliminate any attempts to fix a game. This is how it is done in some futsal and beach football tournaments and it's time they do it for football too [biggrin]

Thanks Farid-LA, I recorded your prediction. FYI, I won't be watching the game either.

I probably won't watch many games in this World Cup anymore, except maybe for Spain games, hopefully they go far. The only country that stood up against Trump's forced war against Iran.

I was debating about this game in my head and I know that on paper, South Africa has a much better team that plays hard and deserves to win. But I feel in this World Cup, the "Gods of FIFA" are in favor of the host teams, especially US and Canada (Mexico does not need help).

So, my prediction is:

South Africa 0 - 2 Canada
