Comments: My feelings are that these negotiations are designed for show. I don’t think they actually negotiate anything during these meetings. Most of the negotiations have been done before. They might talk about specific details but the main issues are discussed and agreed upon before they meet. They wouldn’t just show up with a blank paper and start from scratch. Either way, I think Iran really needs a deal and Trump really needs a victory. I expect very similar agreement they had under Obama. Trump will announce it as a major deal no one could make and IRI will tell its people we didn’t give them anything more. An agreement, no matter what, would be good for Iranians for at least a short while.

Comments: Here is how I see the various elements influencing these talks: Israel: No peace with Iran. Definitely no nukes. No talks with Iran. Regime change. Russia: USA should talk to Iran. Will cooperate with the USA to put pressure on Iran but to a point. No war with Iran. Definitely, no regime change. Might agree to limited strikes. USA: It should be all about Trump. He should look like a hero. Does not matter ow the talks go. No ultimate goal. Iran: Limited bombing is desired-will give a reason to develop nukes. But will settle for a delay and lift of sanctions. So, in this complex scenario, the big question is what will the US do since it is being pulled in opposite directions by Israel and Russia. I think Trump will go with Russia. It already has. I think the final (announced or unannounced) outcome will be lifting of sanctions and kicking the can down the road.

Comments: "That was just a nice layer on ugly reality that was displayed in movies." This ruse continued for many decades by both parties as it worked for them. But it got to a point where the ugly truth underneath started feeling very uncomfortable with the pretty face they were painting on top. Iran says “constructive” talks with the United States in Oman’s capital have ended, adds the two sides have agreed to hold more discussions next week.
