Netanyahu faces a delicate task in setting out his stall because he risks being seen as challenging two of Trump’s most respected aides by mapping out a set of demands that could force the US into prolonged conflict with Iran. He also risks angering Trump by opening up divisions in the Republican party, especially if he reminds the US president that he made repeated unfulfilled promises to come to the help of Iranian protesters. Netanyahu’s turbulent relationship with Trump was already entering another rough patch as he continues to stall on his Gaza peace plan by barring a Palestinian technocratic body from entering the strip, and seeking in effect to annex the West Bank.

Five of their meetings were held in the U.S. and one in Israel. Israel wants the Oman-mediated negotiations to go beyond Iran’s nuclear program and include a complete halt to uranium enrichment, restrictions on Tehran’s missile program and an end to its support for regional allies. However, following the first round of U.S.-Iran talks held on Feb. 6 in Oman, Israeli officials appear unconvinced that Trump is committed to Israel’s demands, which Tel Aviv conveyed last week to U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff during his visit to Israel. There is “a state of deep uncertainty in Israel regarding the direction the American president is taking on the Iranian issue,” Israel’s Maariv newspaper said on Feb. 9.

Comments: HAMVATAN, I was called IRI agent many times because I was against US attacking Iran. I was for the 1st deal with Iran when it was with most of the world powers. I can’t be sure if it would be good for people but I was willing to give it a try. I made the argument that a free trading Iran COULD lead to a free Iran. No guarantees but much better than what Iranians have experienced in the past 10 years. I was hoping for $ to drop or even rise at much slower pace but again, I was accused of wishing that so I can profit more from selling my homes in Iran! Either way, if someone disagrees with someone else, it should not be dismissed or attacked. That is the problem with our generation. As Faramarz said, I believe the younger generations are better than we are when it comes to tolerance and respect for others.

Comments: I also thought his exit from Iran was very opportunistic and for his own good even though he presented it as doing it for Iran. Just a year before his exit, he nominated himself to be the IFF head in the very same IRI. But after his turn down, everything went a different way. |
