March 17 (Reuters) - Macquarie (MQG.AX), opens new tab has withdrawn from bidding for a stake in Kuwait's oil pipeline network worth up to $7 billion, two sources familiar with ‌the matter said, becoming one of the first known investors to pull out of a Gulf deal due to the Iran war.
The Australian infrastructure investor notified Kuwait Petroleum Corporation on Friday that it was exiting the process because of the conflict and uncertain outlook, one source said, as dealmakers try to press ahead with the transaction despite unprecedented regional volatility.

In an interview yesterday, US President Donald Trump warned that NATO faces a “very bad” future if US allies fail to assist in securing the Strait of Hormuz, the vital oil waterway currently blocked by Iran.
Here’s how some key countries have responded to Trump’s request for assistance in the strait:
European Union: EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said that it’s in Europe’s “interest” to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, but also said that “it is out of NATO’s area of action” and that “there are no NATO countries in the Strait of Hormuz.”
Germany: A German government spokesperson said this morning that “this war has nothing to do with NATO. It is not NATO’s war.” Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also told reporters that he does not see a role for NATO members in the Strait of Hormuz.
United Kingdom: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said today that his country is working with allies “to bring together a viable collective plan that can restore freedom of navigation in the region as quickly as possible and ease the economic impact.”
Australia: Though it wasn’t asked by Trump to send vessels to the Strait of Hormuz, Australia’s transportation minister said today that her country will not be sending ships to the waterway.
China: China’s foreign ministry spokesperson sidestepped a question about whether it had received any US requests to send ships to the Strait of Hormuz, calling on “all parties to immediately cease military actions, avoid further escalation of tensions, and prevent regional turbulence from inflicting greater impacts on global economic development.”
Japan: Japanese leader Sanae Takaichi told parliament today that the country is not currently planning to dispatch warships to the strait.

EU Ambassador James Moran says there is broad agreement across Europe the war on Iran by Israel and the United States lacks any legitimacy.

“There is an overwhelming view in the European Union that this is an illegal war of choice on the part of Israel and the United States, and Europe should have absolutely nothing to do with it, at least so far as offensive actions are concerned,” Moran told Al Jazeera.

He added the position reflects a strong consensus across the bloc.

“And I think there’s very, very strong consensus for that in the mainstream of European Union thinking.”

However, Moran warned Europe still faces serious economic and security consequences from the conflict, particularly if tensions threaten shipping routes in the Gulf.

“Europe is paying the highest price for the threats against the Strait of Hormuz”, and at the same time “[Russian President] Putin, who is the main adversary for Europe, is getting most of the benefit in terms of higher oil prices.”

Moran said European leaders are now discussing how they might help protect shipping through the strait without joining the war.

“The problem is how to do that strictly defensively, and not getting dragged into a war of aggression.”
