Comments: If you look at IRI history and look at moments that seemed too much for them, the West comes to their rescue. If it wasn’t for Iraq attacking Iran, we would have had a different system long time ago. If it wasn’t for couple of large amounts of money being transferred to Iran by various presidents (D & R), it could have gone down a long time ago. If not for this so called 12 day war, we could have seen a large movement in Iran with power and water issues. Bazar is almost empty due to power shortages. Travel within Iran is almost dead. People are ready for a change but the West gave the system another excuse to suppress their citizens.
Comments: مجسمه سنگی داریوش یکم، شاه هخامنشی، یکی از برجستهترین نمونههای تبادل فرهنگی و سیاسی میان ایران و مصر باستان است. این مجسمه از سنگ گرانیت ساخته شده . داریوش در این اثر با لباس سنتی ایرانی بهتصویر کشیده شده، اما بر پایهی آن، کتیبههایی به خطهای میخی فارسی باستان، ایلامی، بابلی و همچنین خط هیروگلیف مصری حک شده است. این مجسمه در منطقهی سوئز مصر کشف شده و احتمالاً در معبدی واقع در شهر هلیوپولیس یا کانتیر (پیرامون دریاچهی تمساح) قرار داشته است. هدف از ساخت آن، تقویت مشروعیت داریوش در مصر بوده؛ جایی که او پس از فتح آن توسط کوروش کبیر، خود را فرعون معرفی کرد تا حمایت مردم محلی را بهدست آورد. از لحاظ سبکشناسی، این مجسمه ترکیبیست از عناصر هنری ایران و مصر: چهره و فرم بدن ایرانیست، اما ساختار نشستن، استفاده از سنگ گرانیت سیاه و نوع کتیبهها از سنت مجسمهسازی مصری پیروی میکند. امروزه این اثر در موزهی ملی مصر در قاهره نگهداری میشود و یکی از نمادهای نادر سلطهی ایرانیان بر مصر باستان بهشمار میرود. این مجسمه نهتنها بازتابی از قدرت شاهنشاهی هخامنشیست، بلکه سندی است بر سیاست هوشمندانهی احترام به فرهنگهای محلی توسط شاهان ایران باستان https://www.instagram.com/reel/DNFuDGAI9hd/

Comments: Zinsky, I remember those block parties. They were so much fun for everyone, especially the incoming students. I was a member of the faculty at BU and man this time of the year was exciting.
It is really sad for me to hear that all that is gone.  At teh time, I was part of the Cognitive and Neural Systems (CNS) Department which got integrated into other Departments after I left. In CNS, about 80% of the students (who, by the way, were top of the line in the world) were from other countries. I, myself, brought two MD graduates from Tehran University to get their PhD in our Department. One is now a practicing MD-PhD in Boston and the other is a member of the faculty at Harvard. All these types of students are now staying home.

Comments: Faramarz, It’s very sad driving around town today. I had a love/hate relationship with the moving day. I hated the traffic, blocked streets and so much furniture on the sidewalks. I also loved seeing these young kids so excited about being here. BU, Harvard, MIT and Northwestern had block parties each year for the new students. It’s mainly dead now. All the universities are laying off professors and administrators. I’m not sure if this is just temporary or will become normal going forward!

In past years, this would be a day with hundreds of moving trucks on the road, used furniture all over town and young students rushing back and forth trying to move out and others move in. Unfortunately, this is a strange year. 53% less international students and 18% less domestic ones. For rent signs are everywhere. A city with over 50 colleges/universities and over 250k students each year, less students is a disaster. More than 1/4 of the economy depends on higher education sector.
