As we read on, and if followed the news closely, Ukrane has been bombing the people of Luhansk and the Donbass region for 8 years. Let's review the news in the last couple of months. Putin repeatedly called on Washington to come to a peace table on the issue, and Biden refused. Instead, Washington kept encouraging Ukrain through promis of arms supply and NATO support. The rest is where we are now.

Where it all came about:
In 2014, Pro-Western factions overthrew Victor Yanukovic, who delayed signing an EU association deal. The Eastern and southern regions with strong ties to Russia came out strongly against the event. Meanwhile, Crimea voted in a referendum to leave Ukrain for Russia. This was followed by Donbass independence. In 2015, Minsk's accord, brokered by Russia, France, and Germany, was signed in which Kiev pledged decentralization reform, providing broad autonomy to the eastern regions.
In 2022, Zelensky said he was "not satisfied with all provisions" of agreement. Russia saw Kiev abandoning the deal altogether. As cross-border shelling continued, more than 13000 people were killed in conflict since 2014.
Last week, officials in Donetsk and Lugansk accused the Ukrainian army of launching heavy artillery across the border, leading to large scale evacuation of civilians to Russia. Thus, Russia recognizes Donbass republics and launches 'military operation' in Ukraine.

“Is there an end game in which he could declare victory? I would say no, he does not have much of an end game. In fact, I would go even a little bit further. I would say that he's already lost to the extent that he has now become a pariah in all of Europe. I think that pariah label is going to stick with him for quite some time. I don't know what the offramp is, but what I worry about more than anything else is lots of casualties in the next week or so. But at some point, Putin will fail. Sadly there will be much pain and suffering before then. But in the end Putin won't win.”

Faramarz, Chomsky calls it a trap for Putin to lead to end of Putin.  Pretty much like how they trapped Milosevic, Saddam, and Qaddafi but at a larger scale. And he was always right.

This is a total crap show.  This is a game. Look at Israel, totally quiet about Russia’s aggression and taking a middle ground, then look at Vienna, who in a right mind can believe that US and Russia on one side of the table negotiating about Iran. US sanctioned the negotiator‘s boss, Lavrov. Now, a report came out of nowhere that it was Russia who shut down Ukraine airline in Tehran with a Russian missile.

By the way, the interesting part about this conflict is that UAE joined India and China in abstaining from voting to condemn Russia. Does anyone know what is going on there?

Faramaraz as Chomsky explains this is a US trap. The Ukrainian President feels betrayed by Biden as Keefer posted his plea. US and Allies are essentially saying we can’t help Ukraine because they are not part of NATO.  But in 1999, after Serbian leaders refused to discuss peace and instead launched an attack against Kosovo, the United States joined forces with NATO in airstrikes against Serbian forces.  Why can’t they do it now?

The answer is simple. They want Russia to take over Ukraine!

On the Ukraine crisis, I see it as a conflict over who (which block) should be ruling the country rather than how the country should be ruled. If there were a communist ruler in Kiev who were friendly with the west, we would still see a war today and if it were a capitalist system that were friendly with Russia, we would not have seen a war today. What people desire on the ground is mostly about their living conditions and quality of life, which is really irrelevant to the conflict. No one cares about that. If one is to argue that the west does, this would be a ridiculous claim, since Ukraine is one of the poorest countries in Europe and if not in the world after being under "western" rule for many years (at least since 2014) but trying to become a market economy with huge supports of the west since its independent in 1991. Just to compare, I have a study site in Kiev and the head of the country's infectious disease control (an MD-PhD) works for me at the site. So, I know his salary. It is $6,000 per year -in line with many African countries that we consider in desperate poverty.

So, my question about this conflict and many others like it is what would be the incentive for people to want to fight for one side or another? Is there any difference in their lives really if Ukraine remains under western or eastern control? There is really nothing. And then the other factor of patriotism is so vague in Ukraine since many feel that they are Russians. So, I think this is why all the calls by Zelenskyy to stand and fight goes mostly into def ears.

Faramarz jan thank you for sharing the videos with us. It is good to know that the centiment is mutual among friends..
On Ostoreh Daie, he plainly sumed it up that his achievements were for Iran, and he attributed them to the people who enabled him, namely, his team mates for the greatness. His humbleness is appreciating. Once again, I wished the establishment would have taken advantage of this source of pride amongst us in elevating the status of our football and the country.
