Two new sub strains of Omicron called BA.4 and BA.5 are spreading rapidly and have caused an increase in corona infections worldwide. What are the characteristics of these strains and how worrisome are they?

Corona has risen again in the world and in some countries it is close to the peak of infection. The number of patients in America and Europe is increasing day by day. The government invite people to follow the guidelines, especially the use of masks, and ask them to get vaccinated. Vaccine manufacturers are developing and producing booster doses to inhibit new Omicron strains. The researchers named the two new sub strains of Omicron BA.4 and BA.5, which are the reason for the resurgence of corona in countries.

But the question is, what are the characteristics of these two sub strains and how did they increase the concern of the rise of Corona again?

BA.4 and BA.5 are close to the Omicron that broke out last winter. These two strains were added to the World Health Organization's watch list in March and designated as worrisome types of the virus in Europe. So these strains have been around before, and now they seem to be spreading much faster than other strains. Most of the European countries are now involved in this strain and it is expected to overtake other types of corona soon. These strains used to be in Portugal and BA.5 is now the dominant strain there. American officials say they are witnessing an increase in the number of infections caused by the two new strains. Corona infection in the UK is also increasing, which is caused by BA.4 and BA.5 of the same strain. Australia has also reported cases.

Experts are not sure how hard these two strains will hit the countries. BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron are not thought to be more lethal than other types of corona. More people than now have received the vaccine, which helps reduce the risk of getting the disease.

But new sub strains seem to be spreading more easily. This is partly because safety may be reduced. Many countries have also lifted their coronavirus restrictions, meaning people are interacting more, which gives the virus a better chance to spread. BA.4 and BA.5 can re-involve people who have recently had omicron. A new wave could lead to more hospitalizations and more deaths.

As with other types of virus, the risk of serious illness is greater for people who are older or have underlying medical conditions. Although current vaccines are not a complete defense against the disease, they are still the best line of defense. Vaccines have reduced the risk of severe disease against other major types of coronavirus, including delta, alpha, beta, and gamma. Doctors say it's essential that people take the recommended number of doses to gain maximum immunity against existing and emerging strains.

It should be mentioned that updated versions of vaccines against different types of corona are being designed and tested. Manufacturers are also trying to speed up this work, and vaccines are expected to reach the market in the fall.
