The United States and Israeli spy network, as I am sure the Russian and the Chinese, do have their own communication infra structure. I am not sure about the technology, but that too might be satellite based. But the important point is that the government really does not have a need for the starlink at the moment. This is why Musk is selling it as helping the people of Iran BS. What he really wants is the government to buy into his system and stand up to the chinese.
Comments: Faramarz I was watching an Israeli documentary about their presence in iran. Although very abstract they did mention that the mother flickers have their own internet connection and system and is outside of iran providers like Irancell or rah avval. They used it for the remote killing of our beloved scientist assassination. What is that? Don't they have to have a tower? Or are they using these laser optics thing you are talking about?

Comments: You are welcome Keefer jAn. Here is a bit more information on the topic: Believe me, it is never about Iran. And it will never provide free internet to the people of Iran. Musk is a business man and on the starlink front, he is facing some stiff obsticles. He is only using the situation to establish his system better. He has found a soft spot in the Biden administration. The Chinese have threatened to suit him and have said that he does not have the right to monopolize the skies and communication network of all countries. Russia surely will go with them. US is not inclined at all to take that battle on on Musk's behalf when the system has a lot of opponents even in the US. Musk is trying to get the government buy in and essentially force a political confrontation with the Chinese. If he is successful and the system is somehow global, like everything else, people in Iran will have to pay and starlink will have to abide by local government rules. Musk will sell his soles to whoever pays. in the short run, the US government can benefit of this as a negotiation tool. It will essentially provide a way for the US government to filter through what comes out of Iran. They publicize what is beneficial and somehow find an excuse to burry the rest. Iran's government will then have to negotiate to get the US stop from doing this. So, it is beneficial for the US government too. Nothing in this for the people though. I can guarantee that.

Comments: Here is my bit on that: Whenever we hear this sort of news of help from outside, we automatically make the jump that this is done to provide people the help. This is not the case. This plan is impossible for providing internet access to all people of Iran as the news makes it sound. What this is about is about giving their own operatives inside Iran the high-powered handsets needed. This provides them with the internet access, not the general population. So, the utility of this is only for spying at this point.

Here is the scoop from a friend who knows this stuff: You’re correct about need of ground stations for Starlink V1.0. These would be towers along Iran's border which would be a target of Iran's military. But the latest deployment which is V2.X uses a single coherent wave much like a laser to connect directly to the sat FEM ( front end module). This is what’s deployed in Ukraine now, but the issue is each ground link requires electricity ( hi power due to that light source) which then can be controlled by the regime. Finally how the hell is SpaceX going to transport, deploy these links inside Iran??? I’m a bit fuzzy on that.
