One German MP told The National that top officials linked to the purge on protests in Iran should not be able to send their children to European universities. Another said Germany should use its G7 presidency to rethink the West’s entire approach to Iran.
Comments: Canadian Premier League football club Vancouver revealed it has hired Afshin Ghotbi as its new head coach. The 58-year-old comes to the team with an incredible wealth of coaching experience, having worked in the game at all sorts of levels from youth football to the very pinnacle of the sport, including coaching at three FIFA World Cups. Ghotbi was born in Iran but moved to the United States as a teenager, and he had a brief stint as a player at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). He began coaching in the 1980s, beginning with the UCLA women's team and going on to found his own academy - American Global Soccer School - in California. He joined the US Soccer organization in the late 1990s, working on the technical staff for the men's national team in 1997 and 1998 during the side's appearance at World Cup '98 in France. Ghotbi went on to work as an assistant coach with the South Korean national team, helping that side at both the 2002 and 2006 World Cups as well as appearances in the Confederations Cup, Asian Cup, and Gold Cup. In 2009, Ghotbi was named head coach of the Iranian national team, helping lead it to the quarterfinals of the 2011 Asian Cup. “I want to thank Vancouver FC for trusting me with this exciting project,” said Ghotbi. “Now is an exciting moment for Canadian soccer, and the ever-growing passion for the game on the Lower Mainland and from coast to coast is evident. I look forward to building a club that will make our fans proud on and off the field.”

Comments: Zinsky, Team Melli has not been a mystery to any team for the past 12 years under CQ, except perhaps to the Americans, who are clueless, just about every important matter in the world. It is in fact good that we are in the same group with them, since we can sure take advantage of their ignorance in the 3rd game, should we need the points to advance. The mystery is true however to the public more than to the national teams that have a very good in-depth understanding of our teams make up and talents. Argentina may have underestimated us 8 years ago, slightly, but neither of Spain or Portugal did in 2018, which makes our performance against them that much more impressive. This year however, will be different, as the recent events in IRAN will surely act as a distraction at the least, if not worse. There is certain to be protests in the stands, distracting our team from their goals, frustrating them and CQ, perhaps leading to the worst performance of Team Melli ever!. If so, this will not be due to their lack of talents, skills, preparation or CQ.
Comments: Iranians living aboard are consumed by success and financial well being. Nothing wrong with that per say. Most have done real well. Well educated and well done financially. One thing we haven’t done is to unite. We simply don’t get along with each other in any meaningful ways. We compete more than collaborate. We undermine rather than help. We are more self centered than united. Iranians should have done much better as a whole but we are individuals, not a group.

The plan Defensive solidity and scoring goals on counterattacks have been the main characteristics of Team Melli for some time and helped Carlos Queiroz shape his unprecedented popularity during his first stint in charge between 2011 and 2019. At the 2014 and 2018 World Cups they came up against some of the great football powerhouses but lost 1-0 to Argentina in Brazil and 1-0 to Spain in Russia, where they also drew 1-1 with Portugal. The performance against Lionel Messi’s Argentina impressed Iranians back home so much there were celebrations in the streets after the narrow defeat. The big downside of Queiroz’s tactics was that Iran struggled to score goals against so-called weaker opposition. They were not able to dominate games and when they did throw players forward the defence was vulnerable; in Queiroz’s last game of his first spell Iran conceded a sloppy goal against Japan in the semi-final of the 2019 Asian Cup and when they then pressed for an equaliser, they let in a further two goals. Queiroz, of course, has not changed completely. The onus is still on a solid defence but the two games in September – a 1-0 win against against Uruguay and 1-1 draw with Senegal – showed Iran are trying to play more from the back and press the opponent higher up the pitch. They are likely to play in a 4-1-4-1 formation at the World Cup and the main question concerns who plays up front. Sardar Azmoun would be the favourite but he has been injured. If he is not fit, Mehdi Taremi is likely to step in. If Azmoun can play, Taremi is likely to start as a left winger. The coach Carlos Queiroz. Sir Alex Ferguson’s former right-hand man is so popular among Iranian football fans that they did not have any issue with him replacing Dragan Skocic, who won 15 out of his 18 games in charge and got the country to the World Cup in record time before he was sacked earlier this year. Not even the farcical circumstances in which Queiroz returned dampened the mood. This is the third time Queiroz will lead Iran at a World Cup but this time it was Iran who got him there rather than the other way around. In fact he had failed to reach Qatar with Colombia and Egypt. If things go well he may well extend his short-term contract and stay on for next summer’s Asian Cup, which is also in Qatar. Star player “I regret that this boy did not go to European football much earlier. It’s all my fault,” Mehdi Taremi’s father cried on a TV show a few months ago and his thoughts echoed those of pretty much everyone in Iran. After years of scoring in Iran and Qatar he finally made the move to Portugal in 2019, joining Rio Ave before a transfer to Porto a year later. He averages about a goal every other game in Europe, and for Iran. Taremi, 30, has come a long way since a last-minute miss for his country against Portugal at the 2018 World Cup. He appears to be getting better and takes comfort from the fact that all recent Ballon d’Or winners have been 30 years or older. Unsung hero When Saeed Ezatolahi moved to Atlético Madrid’s B side as a 17-year-old in 2014 everyone expected him to have a brilliant club career ahead of him. It may not have turned out quite like that – he is now with Vejle in Denmark having spent a considerable amount of time in Russia – but it is a different story with Team Melli. He is a certain starter for Iran, his work rate appreciated by everyone. His absence was keenly felt in Iran’s first game at Russia 2018 and Queiroz will hope he won’t have the same headache this time. Qatar stance Iran has had tense relationships with several Arab countries in recent years but Qatar has been a rare ally and the impact they have had on the football world is serving as a role model for Iranians. There is nothing but praise for Qatar among Iranian football figures and there are many who think the migrant worker situation is not as bad as western media paints it. Iranian fans may well have banners protesting over something in Qatar, but it won’t be about the workers. National anthem Iran’s current national anthem, Sorude Melliye Jomhuriye Eslamiye Iran, is the second it has had after the Islamic revolution in 1979. The first was too long so in 1990 the government decided to replace it with a shorter one. The famous poet and songwriter Sayed Bagheri wrote the lyrics and Hassan Riahi composed the music, although some accused him of copying South Korea’s national anthem (to be fair they have quite a bit in common). The lyrics refer to the Islamic revolution and in the final line express the hope that the Islamic republic of Iran will survive for ever. This is something fans may protest against and try to challenge in Qatar. All-time cult hero Who else but the man who was the top scorer in the world at international level until Cristiano Ronaldo broke his 109-goal-record last year? Nearly two decades after his last appearance for Team Melli, Ali Daei (his nickname Shahriar means “The King” in farsi) is still the poster boy of Iranian football. He was one of eight Fifa legends taking part in the draw for the Qatar World Cup but has been banned from coaching for three years after an outburst against a club president. Has been supportive of the recent protests in the country and had his passport seized by the authorities for a week.
Comments: The protesters had gathered in Karaj, just outside Tehran, to mark the 40th day since the shooting death of Hadis Najafi, 22, one of several young women to have been killed during the protests. The demonstrations were ignited by the death of another woman held by the country's morality police. Videos circulated online showed thousands of protesters in Karaj and clashes with police. In one of them, a helicopter flies over the protesters and drops flash grenades in an attempt to disperse them before landing in the middle of a highway. Government supporters on social media said the helicopter was sent to aid wounded policemen. The state-run IRNA news agency quoted the head of emergency services in Karaj, Ahmad Mahdavi, as saying two people were killed and others wounded during the unrest. He did not specify whether the two were protesters or security forces or provide further details. IRNA circulated videos and photos on social media showing a police pickup truck that had crashed into a concrete barrier on a highway. It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, but videos showed protesters hurling rocks at the vehicle and a man firing into it as at least three wounded individuals were inside. The photos showed what appeared to be two lifeless bodies. The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that three policemen were seriously wounded in clashes with protesters. It was not immediately clear if it was referring to the same event. Tasnim also reported that protesters set fire to a police kiosk and van. The semiofficial Fars news agency said a member of Iran's paramilitary Basij force was stabbed to death in Karaj. Iranian authorities heavily restrict media coverage of the protests and have periodically shut down internet access across the country, making it difficult to confirm details of the unrest.
Comments: Interesting! I moved to SD from DC in 1998. Lived there for 21 years and then here. Raised two kids in SD. Can you imagine what would happen to Iran if half of Iranians living aboard go back? I would estimate the total number of Iranians living outside Iran is near 5 million (give and take a million). Most are well educated, seem the world and have experiences in all sectors. Oh well…
Comments: I found Indian food to be so much better in Boston. There used to be a place near Kenmore Square, we used to go to for every job outing. I is called the "Indian Quality". It is a small place on Commonwealth. The food though was excellent, every time. You should give it a try. It may still be good.
Comments: Yes, if you include the next generations, like our kids and on, I am sure the number is near 3 million just in the US. This is not such a high number compared to other minorities. But because of the very high average education level and household income, the 3 million are more significant than the number itself.
Comments: Yes, I did. 1999-2001. Got really tired of traffic. Spent three hours daily in my car or the train. At the time I had small kids and it seemed crazy to me that I spent three hours a day away from my family for no good reason. Attended a conference where I wasn't even presenting, got offered a job in SD, and problem solved. Otherwise, I actually had a great job in Boston.

Based on a 2012 announcement by the National Organization for Civil Registration, an organization of the Ministry of Interior of Iran, the United States has the highest number of Iranians outside the country. In 2021 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran published new statistics showing that 1,500,000 Iranians who were born in Iran are living in the U.S. according to the most recent data. However this number only represents Iranian born population who moved to the U.S. at some point and does not include the number of U.S.-born Iranians and other groups with Iranian ancestors.

Comments: Wow 10+ Persian restaurants is a lot more than I remember! I wish we had good quality food as well. We only have expensive food. The $50/soltAni is better than the rest but still leaves much to be desired!
