Comments: Iran’s World Cup defeat to the United States was met by cheers and celebrations in Tehran and other Iranian cities on Tuesday evening, as protesters hailed the country’s exit from the tournament as a blow to the ruling regime. The nation was eliminated from the tournament in Qatar after its 1-0 loss on Tuesday, ending a campaign that has been overshadowed by anti-government protests that have raged for months at home. But there are concerns about the safety of the Iranian players returning home across the Persian Gulf, after the team initially refused to sing Iran’s national anthem before their first game in an apparent show of solidarity with demonstrators. The team’s families were also threatened with imprisonment and torture in advance of the match, a source involved in the security of the games said. People in several Iranian cities celebrated from inside their homes and residential buildings moments after the final whistle, which came in the early hours of Wednesday local time, while videos posted on social media showed people honking their car horns, chanting and whistling.
Comments: A man is reported to have been killed by security forces in northern Iran, as anti-government protesters publicly celebrated the national football team's elimination from the World Cup. Activists said Mehran Samak was shot in the head after he honked his car's horn in Bandar Anzali on Tuesday night. Videos from other cities showed crowds cheering and dancing in the streets. Many Iranians refused to support their football team in Qatar, seeing it as a representation of the Islamic Republic.

Comments: There are many reasons for any team to miss out the playoffs. Anything from basic group they are in to injuries and basic luck. There are of course the usual ones such as coach, players, lineup and such. Basic football skills and issues. For Iran and TM it went beyond all that. We can do a root cause analysis of all the above and I’m sure we can find many things that could have helped but in all reality, this team was under so much pressure from all sides. I don’t think any team would have performed at their peak under the circumstances. I certainly hope the players can go back to their lives as normal as it can be and leave this WC behind them.
Comments: Thank you; I have everyone's predictions for tomorrow. Regarding IRAN's game today; it is certainly sad to see us exit in such manners. US played better than we did, in the first half. I felt we were too cautious and gave them too much respect. They were too young and inexperienced to deserve that level of respect, in my opinion. The last 20 minutes, we stepped up and had a couple of interesting chances; too bad we didn't start that earlier. Of course, I know that US played differently in the last 20 minutes also, defending mostly to not give up a goal. In conclusion, we should have done better; we had too many distractions, and didn't play up to our potential; and that is the saddest thing. Now, we have to wait 4 more years...
