Comments: VAR looks at the origin of the play not the continuation. Once the keeper comes out to punch the ball Iran's #4 is offside because of the stupid rule about the defender becoming the keeper. In the continuaiton of the play the ball does hit the keeper and falls to Iran's #4 but he was offside at the start of the play. At any rate I myself never knew about this rule before last night and I bet 99.9% of fans did not either. It's a rule that only professioanl refs know about since it almost never happens, and since it takes 5 minutes to explain to a fan it is pure BS rule and has to go
Comments: I was thinking the same thing. The ball bounced off the goalie. Offside is when a player receives the ball from teammates and is in offside position. Bouncing off another defender/goalie should eliminate the offside! At this stage, it doesn’t matter.
