Comments: Zinsky jAn, I can give you a real life example. One of my PhD students had to do the research and write an article that can be published in two weeks for his doctoral qualifying exam. We gave him the topic which was in an area that no one had explored. He had to perform a systematic review of all published articles and then see what conclusions he could draw and then write up all the results. Instead of two weeks, it took him a month, full time working on it. Many days, I observed myself that he would spend over 10 hours/day in the lab working on it. For the fun of it, I also gave the prompt to Facebook's AI. In a matter of less than a minute it not only read all the articles (over 1000) but also reached some conclusions and drafted the report. I was happy that it mostly agreed with the student's work, but also had caught stuff that he did not. So, I told all my PhD students that they are now obsolete. Joking aside, it is routine in my lab and many others that the first round of research is done using AI MLL models. So, this is already here. What worries me, and I think you and many others, is: 1. Loss of control: This is more along the lines of the singularity event. This IMO is far away since it requires automation of everything. 2. Loss of creativity: This is an imminent threat, IMO. It is already happening. Students in my lab are already using ChatGPT generated titles and abstracts for their articles. When routinely done, human's creativity will subside. Phones and constant digital connection with each other took a giant step in this direction and AI will complete that trip. My biggest fear is the loss of the human brain as we know it.

Comments: Faramarz, I was not worried about it until recently when I used some tools to do some research. I also noticed my younger daughter, a doctorate student, asked a question from ChatGPT and the system practically wrote the whole paper for her!!! She was too worried about using the paper that she didn't use it, but it was written so well, it was scary!!! I know the idea has been around for a while, but I believe it has taken off like a rocket the past few years. It is moving too fast. The godfather you mentioned said something that made lots of sense and was scary as well. He described the difference between learning curve for any discovery and the time it takes to train humans to become expert on any subject. Imagine few hundred extremely smart kids in a class learning about a subject from even smarter professor. It would take them years to become the best at any subject matter. AI might take a while to get there but as soon as it has, it can transfer the knowledge to other machines in matter of seconds and all other machines will be as smart as the first one. Not all humans are created equally, but machines could all be as smart as any other machine! This doesn't have to be scientific. Basic stuff humans get trained to do like driving, cooking, playing musical instruments, writing or basically being somewhere to do something! Once again, my worry is not that the machines will attack humans or make them slaves as we have seen in movies. I think with AI moving the speed it is, humans will not be needed! No one needs to learn anything or do anything. We can sit around, be as lazy as we want, and AI will take care of it all. Why go to college or even learn to read or write? Just ask a machine and it has all the answers. I don't know the timeline. 10-15 years might not be accurate, but we are going to get there sooner than later.
Comments: Zinsky jAn, the event you are describing is called the singularity. I hope that it is not only 10-15 years away. I think the era of generative AI has shocked everyone in the sense that we all knew that we were working on it but never realized how close we were. The development of large language model (LLM) AIs shocked everyone. It is in its infancy, and yet, after only about a year of public use, we use it in our research as a starting point routinely. It cuts through so much wasted time, but it is not perfect and hallucinates at times.
Having said that, the underlying fear is that people who train such models will slip and (intentionally or unintentionally) provide it with the power that humans no longer can control. For this reason Hinton, the god father of AI at Google quit: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65452940. Most of the development at Google and elsewhere in the private sector is now being done by Hinton's students. I do share his concerns. In addition to his concerns, I think that the introduction of LLM AI models freely has hit us from the left field, and I do not think people or the policy are prepared to deal with this rapid deployment of models that are even incomplete. Comments: AI is a new buzzword for the ordinary people who are not well versed in technology. It's been around for more than 40 years now. And it is humans who design the hardware and software that fuels AI applications. So rest assured that AI will not dominate humans, but some 'humans' will use AI to dominate ordinary humans.
