Comments: Yes Farid, Zinsky is right. I do clinical research but am not a clinician. I work with a lot of them usually on difficult to treat cases. So, I know a lot about their life style, but clearly not everything. Depending on what you need to know, I may or may not be able to answer.
Comments: Farid, I don’t know much about life in Australia. I don’t know if you can compare that to other countries either. One experience I have with people in their 50s, 60s and above you came to America and were making a decision to either live here or go back after they got their US passport is that most decided to go back. It’s not easy for most people who have lived in the same country/city all of their lives to pack and leave. My parents were the first people who came, got their documents and went back home. They visited couple of times and that was that. I had couple of cousins who did the same just last year. After 6 years going back and forth between Iran and USA, they received their US passport and haven’t been back since. Lastly, it is an old friend who couldn’t leave Iran when I did some 40 years ago. He stayed, went to war, became the captain of navy, started working as a captain for an Iranian shipping company. Retired 10 years ago. Opened a coffee shop in Tehran and shut it down during Covid. He has been here for the past two years and can’t wait to go back in 3-4 years after he has his citizenship. He is leaving the kids here as he feels they won’t have a future in Iran.

Comments: Farid, I believe (might be wrong) that Faramarz is talking about friends and family.
Comments: Agha Faramarz does this mean "the lives of some people depends on my being there." that you are a clinician? Would love to learn your perspective on being a clinician in the US.
Comments: Agha Zinsky do not promise things you are going to break . I enjoy very much reading what you guys write and so, there is no reason for you to promise to stop. I cannot say I know much about retirement. To be honest I haven't even thought about it and have assumed that it will somehow work out with the career that I am in. But this has always been a financial assumption. You guys are talking about life style, friendships, and more. Since I am here in Australia, I would love to hear from Fred from Australia. He seems very happy with his choice of settling in Ozzie land mid-course to Europe, I think it was. I wonder how he feels about being away from our culture. Here, I do not have a lot of Iranian friends and the people I hang out with (my apartment mates) are from India and Palestine, the family of both have settled here for some time. So, they grew up here. I, on the other hand, grew up in Iran and have been here only for a few years. What you guys describe about California life would bother me too. I always though that California was a second Iran, outside of Iran. But does not sound like it. I imagine that when you are young and busy you do not notice these things but then when you get older, you all seem to be wanting more from life. Agha Fred, I would much appreciate your comments about these aspects in Australia. My perspective is only based on two friends and a very busy life style.
Comments: I should stop & I will, I promise. I’ve been accused of being lazy. I wasn’t sure what it meant for a long time and would get upset! After I realized what it meant (in my situation), I accepted it! I didn’t want to get prepared for a gathering. I don’t mean taking a shower and putting clothes on!!! I mean getting prepared to brag, have my guard up, play the game, defend what we mine and attack what was theirs! I assumed that a gathering was supposed to be fun! It was my fault for making assumptions…🥴
Comments: Faramarz, One more thing you mentioned that resonates with me is the Iranian lifestyle in SoCal. I know people get offended by this and I would like to put a disclaimer that this is only my personal opinion and it doesn’t reflect the opinions of anyone else. Once again, it’s my fault but I did not find any true friends during my 20+ years in SD. As a family, we had at least two dozen families we spent time with. Dinners, parties, kids playdates, barbecues and such. There was nothing specialty wrong with any of them but I couldn’t connect with them in deeper levels. Somehow, the friendship we shared was not what I expected. I always craved the basic friendship we shared when we were younger and less competitive. Just gather for a cup of tea/coffee without the fanfare. Basic conversations about one’s day. BS and laugh about things that might not be that funny but funny for the time. Have fun without expectations. Less talk about material stuff and more about life. I accepted that it was me, not them. I wanted something different. It’s ok to want different things but it means one has to choose whom they hangout with.
Comments: I don’t know how IRI deals with women in stadium situation! It’s one thing to BS about stadium safety during the internal league games, another thing to keep the stadiums empty for international games.
Comments: Faramarz, I don’t have the stats but some just can’t afford to retire no matter what. Others could but need to make serious lifestyle changes. That isn’t easy but doable. Last group are fortunate enough that can retire without any major changes. Other than financial considerations, as you mentioned, it’s an adjustment to retirement lifestyle. Retirement for some means sitting around, doing nothing. For some means spending time with friends and family (if any around) and for others means something totally different. It’s not one size fits all. It’s not always the question of “can” rather “want”. I, personally, are figuring the can part because I’m sure about the want one. I still have one kid in college getting her PHD. She doesn’t need me around, I suppose, but I like to be around for the next couple of years just in case. After that, I intend to fast track the retirement process and get it fully rolling in 3-5 years. Retirement should not be another race in people’s lives. Who gets there first or who does it better? It’s not a competition but for most, it becomes one.
Comments: ‘Historic move’: Saudi football clubs to play in Iran as travel ban liftedSaudi Pro League clubs will play their Champions League games in Iran after both countries agreed to resume home-and-away matches, the Asian Football Confederation said. ![]() Published On 4 Sep 20234 Sep 2023 Saudi Arabia and Iran have reached a “groundbreaking” deal to resume home-and-away football matches between club sides after seven years of competing in neutral venues, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has said. The move by the two countries’ football federations would contribute to “fostering closer ties between their respective footballing communities, allowing clubs to host matches on their home turf and visiting the respective away stadiums, creating a more engaging and exciting experience for the fans and players alike”, the AFC said in a statement on Monday.
Comments: Zinsky, "long essay"? Read how much I wrote.
Comments: Sorry guys, I asked a question and ran. Busy days. So, let me explain why I asked that question. I asked it because I am one of those fortunate ones that financial I could retire any time. I do not have any loans. I could have probably retired five years ago and if I cut some corners like Zinsky suggested, probably ten years ago. But I work because 1. If I were living in a more interesting place where I felt culturally closer to people in my age group, perhaps I would have retired. This perhaps would have win me over a) and b). I especially do not like the lives of Iranians in my age group. We do the weekly mehmoonies, outings, and whatever. But they circle around food (mostly for women), alcohol (mostly for men), and luxury (car, house, ...) These things kept us busy for a few decades but am now done with it all. There is nothing intelectual in these for me, and at the same time the simple pleasures of life has escaped us. Sitting at a corner cafe, sipping on tea or coffee, is something that I seem to crave at this stage. Sitting at the Starbucks and having the tired conversation of republicans or democrats one more time is just not appealing to me. So, I stay at work.

Comments: The painful part of SS and Medicare contributions is that it caps for income over $150K (I don’t remember the exact number). People who are fortunate enough to make more than $150K/year should contribute more to the system for the ones who can’t. Once again, I’m complaining and being my socialist self!
Comments: رشتی, Very true. Most people don’t know how it works. There is no one size fits all. I, personally, would wait till I’m really retired (no other income) to collect my SS. On the other hand, you wait too long and it might run out!!! That would surely kill some people prematurely!
Comments: I suppose most people in our age know this but worth mentioning that one can create an account and check their retirement statements via Social Security website. One can find the exact amount they will receive as SS benefits based on years they worked and how much they have contributed. It also breaks down the amount based on the age one chooses to retire. It can start at 62 and reaches its highest at 70. Average SS monthly benefit is around $2,500/month. It can go as high as $4,600/month if fully funded due to years of work and if retire later (70 and above). It is still taxed which is stupid if you ask me but if that is the only income, taxes will be very low to nothing at the end.
