Comments: Sanctions only work when the government/regime being sanctioned give a damn about the country and its people. It has been tried and failed in many countries. From NK to Cuba and Iran. Government of these countries continue to suppress the population while using the sanctions to enrich themselves. The main victims are the people.

Comments: Faramarz that is a very hard question. I am not sure. I agree that his presence probably is preventing other leaders to emerge. But I think if RP can be successful, I do not care. The real question though is whether he will be successful or not. One side of me wants to say my eyes do not drink water.
My predictions: Brazil 2 - Iran 0 Iran 6 - England 0 Iran 12 - New Caledonia 0

Comments: For any leader, but especially RP, this is important: "if he can unite people inside Iran" This is the key. The way Khomeini became successful, was by foreign powers to help unit people in Iran behind him. This time no foreign power is going to do this-USA happy with status quo. So, any leader can be propelled to the forefront rapidly as soon as s/he gains traction in Iran.
Comments: What is a concern is whether RP's presence is preventing another more competent leader to emerge. My thinking is that it definitely does. If we look back in another 20 years and say boy this movement really did not get anywhere. I am sure most would blame it on its leadership. The question is whether this should be done now. There has been 45 years of failure.

Comments: Agreed! RP might not be the best option but if he can unite people inside Iran, I’m all for it in the meantime. RP has a live feed for people in Iran to talk to him/ask questions tomorrow.
Comments: Agha Reza I do not like RP much myself but I think at this stage a single leader for the movement is important. But you are right that unfortunately we do not have any other options. That is not so great.
Comments: There are some demonstrations announced here in the states. But I think the what happens in Iran is what matters. What is important is to see how many will refer to RP. Unfortunately, even in opposition, we are in the single party hezb rastAkhiz. We try to undermine every other leader. I think other than Mojahedin everyone needs a voice in this. But moghrez voices will not allow this.

Comments: Iranians haven't rallied around a single opposition leader Not long after the uprisings started, as many prominent Iranian activists were being rounded up and imprisoned, a group of opposition figures outside Iran formed what initially appeared to be a united coalition. They included Reza Pahlavi, the son of the former shah of Iran, Masih Alinejad, a human rights activist who was the target of a 2021 international kidnapping plot, Hamed Esmaeilion, whose wife and daughter were killed in a Ukrainian passenger plane downed by the Islamic Republic in 2020, and several other prominent figures. But that coalition fell apart almost as quickly as it came together due to political inexperience, divisions between coalition members and infighting among their supporters in the diaspora. For those inside Iran, there was also a sense that these figures who'd spent years outside Iran couldn't fully represent them. Protesters insist that having no leader whom the government could target was to their benefit and that it helped keep the unrest going. But the strength of leaderless movements is also its greatest weakness — there's no person or party poised to inspire and galvanize broad swaths of society in order to come up with an alternate system of governance. "As we've seen in virtually every other country in the Middle East that's experienced popular unrest in which they've succeeded in bringing down dictators, it hasn't been a happy ending," says Sadjadpour, who advised the Iranian opposition coalition group during its short lifespan. "It's been the illiberal forces who take over. And frankly, that's one of the lessons of the 1979 revolution in Iran, that it's not enough to simply bring down an autocratic regime. You have to have an organized concrete vision for a more democratic, tolerant, accountable system."
Comments: Iranian authorities appear to be bracing for a resurgence of popular unrest on the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death in police custody. Arrests, surveillance, and executions have only picked up in the months since the protests – dubbed by many Iranians as the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement – began in September 2022. Still, resistance continues in varying forms, many Iranians say.
