However, the game was called off by the referee when the Saudi Al-Ittihad refused to play. The thing is that many on the Iranian side will object to arreh. Does that give them the right not to play in SA? I am certain that they came up with some security issue. Otherwise this is far too obvious. Under normal circumstances, I am sure they would win if they filed a complaint with FIFA. But like you said Zinsky, this is where the hated IFF comes in play. I am sure that the $200K will hurt. So, I am sure that Sepehan will appeal. I would love to see what other details come out in that appeal.
Comments: Reality is that Iran is so isolated and hated that AFC, FIFA or any other sport organization would vote against them without much reasoning. Based on what I have read, AFC doesn’t directly talk about statues or political issues. They basically say something was not right. I’m fully supportive of separation of sports and politics but I’m not sure what that really means in practice. What is ok and what crosses the line? Pictures are ok but not statues? Is it about certain persons pictures/statues or all? Either way, it’s another stupid act by Iranian football federation to not only take away 3 points of this game but also take away small joy from the fans wanting to watch some football games. . You can refuse to play for security reasons. But if the objection is to a statue, that is clearly mixing politics in. How would FIFA defend that?
