Comments: Good to see Syria and Palestine qualify for the round of 16 for the first time in their Asian Cup history. But the 3rd place finish qualification is not good. China almost made it with 2 points and no goals scored! That's bad! Instead they should only let the top team in each group advance to the knock out stage and the then two best 2nd place finishers. Imagine how much more exciting the tournament would have been with that rule, winning the group actually meant something!
Comments: As I proposed earlier and it’s open for suggestions we will continue the prediction process by using the following rules Round of 16: predict the winner (doesn’t matter how) for 2 points Quarterfinal 3 points, semifinal 4 points and 3rd place and final 5 points. Anyone who hasn’t participated as of now, could jump in as well. There will be 16 + 12 + 8 + 10 = 46 points in knockout stages
Comments: GN did the right thing and went with his A line up for the UAE match. This was a good preparation game for the boys and the quality of play was much better than the previous 2 matches. VAR is really hurting the game, Iran scored 5 goals but 3 were disallowed and then a very soft penalty was called against Iran due to VAR. It did not help that the VAR officials were from Saudi and Kuwait ![[biggrin]](https://cdn.websitetoolbox.com/images/boards/smilies/biggrin.gif "Big Grin - :D") And once again Bayranvand proved he is the best keeper in Asia. His penalty save preserved Iran's lead and lifted the team. They scored the 2nd goal shortly after penalty save. And he has a right to be mad at his defenders that took away 2 shutouts from him by allowing goals in added time.

Comments: Thanks Zinsky. I am glad Shahryar is not in it. We would have had two people leaving the rest of us in the dust. :) There was also a really strange shot from a closed angle by #11 who came in late in the game. a pass by him would have set up Taremi in front of an empty goal. He is not such a bright player. Not sure why he is on TM. I have seen him do that a few times now. He just does not pass.

Comments: I watched the whole game live. We were going all the way. No mercy. After they disallowed the perfectly good goal, the team changed direction. They seemed to let it go. The extra time was crazy. No one wanted to do anything other than killing the clock.
Comments: Sharyar I am glad you remember that game too. for some reason, I cannot find anyone here who remembers that game! I do look forward to seeing the rest of the game tonight. Sounds like an exciting game with so many goals called back. I saw the highlight of the last one and in no way it was not a goal! The defender actually was obstructing his path! What was frustrating to me was that before the "lock down" almost every time we had the ball, we created a near goal situation. So, it was obvious we were going to score more. But then we shut that down!!! I give it to Rashti for expressing his feeling so freely.
Comments: Faramarz, I feel Rashti's frustration and agree with him also. I do not like GN as a coach. Iran played a really good game almost entirely. during the 13 minute added time at the end and giving up a bad goal, they got scared and I think GN told them to pull back. This has always hurt us. Also, the game you mentioned all those years ago, is a disgrace and a black chapter in football history. Rules were created to prevent that in the future, and for the most part, they have worked.
Comments: Just about every VAR decision went against us. The offsides were ok. The 1st one was by inches. The 2nd one was more obvious. The penalty was not penalty. The 3rd goal disallowed was as legitimate as any. I think if they would not disallowed the goal, the game would have ended 4-0 or more. I suppose it doesn’t matter. We would have finished 1st with 9 points either way.

Comments: Did you guys see how thankful the UAE coaching staff were after the game to GN? That I found shameful. If I were Palestinian, I would have felt very bad that the spirit of sportsmanship was out the window.
Comments: Shahryar jAn, I only saw the last 15 minutes. And so, I am only talking about that period. I do feel Rashti's frustration. I recall a game between Germany and Austria that was even worse than the last 15 minutes of this game for the full 88 minutes of the game. Ref blew the whistle early. He had seen enough. The ball never crossed teh half line. I remember feeling so sad that the tie resulted in elimination of an algeria that had beaten Germany and was clearly better than Austria in the world cup. I felt the same way when I watched the last 15 minutes. The rest of the game sounds like it was a real one. |
