Police in Europe are arresting pro-Palestinian protesters and clearing encampments.

In countries across Europe, students have staged their own pro-Palestinian sit-ins and protests on the lawns of their universities. And in several instances, the authorities are taking a similar approach to their U.S. counterparts: shutting them down.

At the University of Amsterdam on Tuesday, the police arrested about 125 students who had fortified their protest camp with wooden barricades. And in Berlin, the German police cleared a similar encampment at the city’s Free University, which included several hundred pro-Palestinian protesters. Both demonstrations had begun on Monday, days after mass arrests swept through protests at U.S. campuses.

The University of Chicago initially took a permissive stance, but removed the camp on Tuesday.

When pro-Palestinian protesters put up tents on a University of Chicago quad early last week, administrators initially took a permissive view.

But that changed on Friday when the university’s president, Paul Alivisatos, wrote a letter saying that demonstrators had violated policies and that the encampment “cannot continue.” Four days later, on Tuesday morning, the university police moved in before sunrise to forcibly disperse the camp.

“The university remains a place where dissenting voices have many avenues to express themselves, but we cannot enable an environment where the expression of some dominates and disrupts the healthy functioning of the community for the rest,” Dr. Alivisatos wrote on Tuesday.

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday compared the protests unfolding on American university campuses to what happened at institutions of higher learning in Germany before World War II.

It was the “same elite centers of learning” from which “Jewish faculty and students were suddenly expelled” in Germany, Mr. Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, said in pointed remarks at a Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony at the Capitol. Today, he said, American universities have become “hostile places for Jewish students and faculty.”

“The very campuses which were once the envy of the international academy have succumbed to an antisemitic virus,” he added. “Students who were known for producing academic papers are now known for stabbing their Jewish peers in the eyes with Palestinian flags.”

The White House on Tuesday condemned the actions of counterprotesters at the University of Mississippi, after videos captured last week showed a crowd of white male students taunting and jeering at a female Black student at a pro-Palestinian protest.

Video clips published by the Mississippi Free Press and The Daily Mississippian showed some of the men, who had gathered to counter a pro-Palestinian protest on the school’s campus in Oxford, Miss., directing derogatory, racist and profane remarks at the Black student. One man appeared to hoot and make monkey gestures at her.

“The behavior captured in that video is undignified, and it’s just racist, period,” said Karine Jean-Pierre, the first Black woman to serve as White House press secretary, during a press briefing on Tuesday.

Outside consultants will investigate the police response to an attack by counterprotesters at U.C.L.A.

A police consulting firm will review a violent confrontation at the University of California, Los Angeles a week ago, in which a group of counterprotesters attacked demonstrators at a pro-Palestinian encampment while security guards and police officers failed for several hours to intervene, and made no arrests.

Michael V. Drake, president of the University of California system, said a law enforcement consultant, 21st Century Policing Solutions, would investigate the incident in an effort to “resolve unanswered questions about U.C.L.A.’s planning and protocols,” as well as the response of other law enforcement agencies.

Several people were injured late on April 30, when a group of counterprotesters, many of whom wore pro-Israel slogans on their clothes and played Israeli music, descended on the pro-Palestinian encampment at U.C.L.A. They began pulling metal barriers away from the demonstrators, shot fireworks toward them and were captured on videos punching, kicking and attacking people, sometimes with objects including sticks, traffic cones and wooden boards.
