Comments: Sorry about spamming.  I am just catching up! On college front, MIT was hot today. UCSD was hot yesterday. Northwestern did not exactly agree to divest from Israel but have promised to have transparency about where they are investing.
Comments: But there are some promising clinical trials for Alzheimer. One is the Iranian doctor who places implants in the brain from Virginia Tech. The other is a very recent discovery that those people who have two copies of the gene apoE4 in their genome, get Alzheimer much sooner (in their 60's). This has at least three big implications. One is that a genetic test can determine who has a second copy and put them on early therapy. The second is that now that we know two copies of the gene causes (very distinct from association) Alzheimer, they will probably be able to show very soon that over expression of the protein causes Alzheimer. We can then actually develop effective drugs to prevent the over expression or neutralize excess ApoE4 protein. The third may be that we will learn about how Alzheimer develops in general and so, identify other targets even in people who do not have two copies of the gene. So, here is hope.
Comments: As for the Alzheimer vaccine story, there may be several. One is this young guy who is making that claim. He also calls himself a teacher. I think that is who you are talking about. In the video that I saw of him, he had some life lessons which I cannot disagree with and believe in most of them myself. But those were very general and about following your dreams. But surely he is full of crap (intentionally or out of naivete). And because Iran is desperate to report some success in any domain, they give people like him a platform without merit. In general, Iran is far behind in life sciences and biotechnology, more so than in other domains. This is because there is no quick way to discoveries in these domains. It is not like AI or cyber security where all you need is the hardware and the great brains in Iran can then compete with most groups outside of Iran. You need very expensive equipment which they do not have and then lots of time which also they do not have. they want success yesterday. There have been several claims like this out of Iran and all are meaningless. The most prominent one was perhaps the COVID vaccine. Once they properly test them, they will see that these solutions do not work, kill the patient, or both.
Comments: The ostAd story was also so funny. I wish I was teaching to pull that off and see the student's face. I have some similar stories that I can elaborate on later. But none were as colorful as this one. Once I kicked half of my class out. :) But this was some time ago. I now do only research and so, although I do not miss teaching all that much, I do miss some of these instances.
