Comments: I predicted this! Next will be the supreme leader selection! Iran’s hard-line parliament speaker emerged on Monday as the most-prominent candidate from within the country’s Shiite theocracy in the race for the June 28 presidential election to replace the late Ebrahim Raisi, killed in a helicopter crash last month. The entry of Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, a former Tehran mayor with close ties to the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, catapulted him to the front of the bevy of candidates, just a day after hard-line former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also registered his bid for the presidency. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave a speech earlier Monday, alluding to qualities that Qalibaf himself has highlighted and potentially signaling his support for the speaker. However, many know Qalibaf who as a former Revolutionary Guard general was part of a violent crackdown on Iranian university students in 1999. He also reportedly ordered live gunfire to be used against students in 2003, while serving as the country’s police chief. Those events could play into an election that follows years of unrest gripping Iran, both over its ailing economy and the mass protests sparked by the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman who died after being arrested for allegedly not wearing her headscarf, or hijab, to the liking of security forces.
Comments: Iran's acting foreign minister, Ali Bagheri, confirmed ongoing negotiations hosted by Oman with the United States on Monday during a visit to Beirut. Iran and the US have lacked formal diplomacy since the 1979 Iranian Revolution. "We have always continued our negotiations...and they have never stopped," Bagheri said. The announcement comes amidst heightened regional tensions. Iran, a staunch supporter of Hamas, designated as a terrorist organization by the US, and the US, a close ally of Israel, stand on opposite sides of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Bagheri's first foreign trip since assuming his role also included a visit to Lebanon, a nation Iran supports through its powerful ally Hezbollah. Hezbollah, a Shia Muslim movement, has engaged in recent cross-border fire with Israel. Bagheri, a former top nuclear negotiator, also addressed ongoing discussions with Western powers regarding Iran's nuclear program. Western nations suspect Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons, a claim Iran consistently denies. "We advise them not to miss the opportunity any further," Bagheri said, urging the West to re-engage with the Iran nuclear deal.

Comments: When the call is so close, we need to trust the ref. Unfortunately, when one goal can determine the champ, it’s always a question.

Comments: The offside call on Persepolis was almost impossible to call. Depending on the angle, the timing of the ball being released and the fact that Persepolis player was running away from the goal and the defender was running towards it, would make the whole thing about few centimeters and fraction of the second! Even with VAR, the call would be challenging. |
