Iran, for its part, has released a list of targets that could collapse the economies of Israel, Jordan, and the Gulf states if it is attacked. The United States and Israel appear to calculate that the operation will be so intense that the Iranians will be unable to do much more than they did during the previous 40 days of war. Netanyahu is confident and is already breathing the possibility of his own political survival. But what about the Gulf countries? Trump and Netanyahu tried every available means to drag the GCC states into their war, without success. With the proven exception of the Emirates, these countries limited themselves to political pressure. Trump used the period of relative calm to pull Israel back from the front line and work on bringing the GCC into the conflict, still without success. Continuous and simultaneous operations by the Gulf states against Iran was the second front Netanyahu and Trump dreamed of. It has not materialized. It has not materialized yet, because the Iranian target list will hit the populations of these countries hard and will once again pressure their governments to reconsider that decision. The truth is simple: the greater the destruction, the smaller the chance of future reconciliation, and the higher the likelihood that the GCC will pivot toward the Abraham Accords. The list of targets Iran has threatened to strike if the coalition attacks its territory includes: Saudi Arabia Ras al-Khair complex: one of the largest hybrid power-generation and desalination plants on the planet. Shuaiba plant: a mega-facility on the Red Sea coast. Jubail complex: a vital cogeneration facility that supplies the capital, Riyadh. United Arab Emirates Jebel Ali complex (Dubai): a massive desalination and power plant located near the port. Taweelah complex (Abu Dhabi): a large reverse-osmosis desalination plant. Fujairah F1 / F2: critical installations on the country’s eastern coast. Barakah Nuclear Power Plant: included on maximum-retaliation lists. Kuwait Doha West complex: the massive plant that supplies the majority of Kuwait’s electricity and residential water. Bahrain Integrated coastal water co-generation plants that supply the island. Qatar Ras Laffan complex: the main industrial hub for processing, power generation, and LNG exports. Jordan Water-supply infrastructure: included because of the country’s logistical cooperation with Western forces. If these targets are hit, they will trigger an economic, social, and environmental crisis across the region, a scenario I am not even capable of fully imagining. By a bitter irony for Netanyahu, a successful Iranian strike against the listed targets in Israel, which are few, would also paralyze Israel’s basic functioning, producing an immediate systemic collapse of its electricity, water, and economic networks. Comments: Ynet News (tied to major Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth) published an April 2026 opinion piece by Amine Ayoub arguing Israel should diplomatically back Morocco in reclaiming Ceuta and Melilla from Spain via Abraham Accords leverage and US channels.
Comments: CIA's estimation was that with JCPOA in place for ten years, Iran's economy would have expanded an average of 10% per year. This was based on the limited JCPOA because USA was not living up to its side of the bargain fully. But this was not acceptable to Israel.
Comments: The problem is that other than Israel/US, a small group in Iran are enjoying the sanctions as it gives them monopoly on all import/export. I know one of them who became a multi millionaire by cornering the market on fabrics used for Islamic clothing. He was one of the only people who had all the connections with the system to import the material from Korea and china. He also partnered with a guy who built a massive factory to make “ro-sare and manto”! In less than a year he made so much money that he opened an office in Dubai in addition to the ones in Iran. By opening the market, he would be out of business rather quickly or at least lose 70% of his business to competition.
Comments: That was my argument after the Obama deal. I thought and hoped that by opening the Iranian market to the world, the system would adjust itself and become more “normal”. Stronger middle class would help de-radicalize the system and eventually make the lives of people better. Of course Israel/Trump don’t like a strong Iran so we are where we are today!
Comments: My hope is that at some point soon the ruling class in the US will realize that the only way they can change Iran's 'behavior' is to integrate them into the world economy. That is remove all sacntions and allow Iran to trade freely without any banking restrictions. Once the ruling class in Iran gets the benefits of being inside the 'club' they will not rock the boat and create problems for the US. That is what Nixon/Ford/Carter/Reagn did with China and it worked. The only problem is there is a big 'bug' inside the US system called Israel that is going to do anything to prevent this from happening. But I think things are changing and Trump is the kind of creature that can do it and get away with it politically.
Comments: Observes, Absolutely. The apartments in Tehran are 2nd to none. I went to a party in the penthouse of a 12 story building. It was all marble and stone 350 square meters apartment with top of the line kitchen and bathrooms. The best part of it was the balcony. Huge size on all 4 sides with endless views and a jacuzzi. Built in outdoor kitchen and much more. The lobby was as beautiful as a 5 star hotel in US. I can’t afford that but looked at one that was about half a million dollars. The same apartment in Boston downtown would cost $2-$3 million easily. 200 square meters with 3 master bedrooms. The lobby was all furnished with marble floors and a pool/spa in the basement. The best part is that the condo fee was $150/month and that included a 24hr security staff that also doubles as concierge (doing groceries, wash the cars, basic handyman and more). The same fee in Boston is over $3,000!!! I’m not buying an apartment as I did that over 15 years ago in Mirdamad near my childhood apartment that my mom is living now. |
