Comments: https://www.politico.com/news/2026/03/23/hes-a-hot-option-white-house-eyes-irans-parliament-speaker-as-potential-u-s-backed-leader-00840730 The Trump administration is quietly weighing Iran’s parliament speaker as a potential partner — and even a future leader — as the president signals a shift from military pressure toward a negotiated endgame. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the 64-year-old who has repeatedly threatened the U.S. and its allies with retaliation, is seen by at least some in the White House as a workable partner, who could lead Iran and negotiate with the Trump administration in the war’s next phase, according to two administration officials. But the White House isn’t ready to commit to any one person, hoping to stress test multiple candidates as they look for someone willing to make a deal, said the two people, both granted anonymity to describe internal thinking. “He’s a hot option,” one administration official said, cautioning that no decisions have been made. “He’s one of the highest…But we got to test them, and we can’t rush into it.” The administration’s interest in pinpointing a negotiating partner signals a desire to find some way out of the quagmire that Iran has quickly become, jolting world markets, spiking oil prices and renewing concern about inflation. And it hints at an answer to a critical question now that the U.S. and Israel have decimated Tehran’s leadership – what, and who, comes next? White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “These are sensitive diplomatic discussions and the United States will not negotiate through the news media.” President Donald Trump hinted Monday at outreach to “very solid” figures inside Iran and said there would be a five day pause on “any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure” as Tehran and Washington engage in diplomatic negotiations. The president’s other big interest is an economic one: oil. According to the first official, Trump doesn’t want to take out Kharg Island, Iran’s major oil hub, because he hopes the next leader will make a deal similar to the one made by Delcy Rodríguez, Nicolás Maduro’s vice president, who took over after he was captured “It’s all about installing someone like a Delcy Rodríguez in Venezuela that we say, ‘We’re going to keep you there. We’re going to not take you out. You’re going to work with us. You’re going to give us a good deal, a first deal on the oil,’” the administration official said. But any belief that the president can select Iran’s next leader the way he did with Rodríguez in Venezuela after the U.S. captured Maduro struck some White House allies as premature, even naive. “It seems like posturing, like he’s trying to speak something into existence,” said one person close to the president’s national security team, who was granted anonymity to speak candidly about the president’s thinking. “It’s good if talks are happening through an intermediary and good that they’re starting to think about a way out of this. But Iran has proven they can take a hit and still make things difficult for us. They’re not about to roll over and give Trump their oil.” Another person in touch with the White House, a Gulf official, suggested that Trump was overstating the progress in talks to create a pretext for walking back his own self-imposed 48-hour deadline, in which he threatened Saturday night to bomb Iran’s power plants if it didn’t reopen the Strait of Hormuz Monday. “He’s definitely buying time and trying to stabilize markets,” said the Gulf official, who was granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. “What’s harder to know is if he’s serious about finding an off-ramp or if he’s putting unrealistic demands out there so that Iran will say no.”

Comments: It seems Ghalibuf is the new leader chosen by US to bring the regime inline with the West. I assume he was for a long time an asset but could not take charge until the people above him were eliminated.
Comments: HAMVATAN Jan, As Trump said about his taxes, it’s not his fault, it is the fault of the system. He was actually proud of it. This is what happens when politicians are paid by the rich and powerful to pass laws that protects them and screws the average citizen. This term of Trump is all about stealing as much money as possible since they are slowly realizing that their total dominance might be in jeopardy. As long as people are stupid enough to elect the same crooks over and over again, nothing will change.

Comments: It’s difficult times to be Iranian these days. No matter how you feel about the war, someone will attack you. Not easy being part of the football team either. If they act normal, they will be labeled IRI supporters. If they show any emotions, they will offend others. I suppose they could just simply refuse to play but that would kill their careers. I don’t recall any nation that had so much anger towards their national team while love them passionately as well. I, personally, don’t know what they can/should do. Whatever they do will not change anything but will be used to attack them for sure.

Comments: Neither Trump, nor Yaboo want RP for one reason or another. It seems odd to me that he is not liked by these two. I still don’t understand why! RP basically told both of them that he will do anything they want. It’s either they don’t believe him, don’t believe he can actually take charge or, and possibly the real reason, is that they want to keep Iran weak and fractured. Imagine if Iran and by default the whole ME became a peaceful, stable region. After a year or two most of the countries in the region would slowly but surely stop purchasing weapons from US, they would ask them to leave the region as it does not require any security. No conflicts, no wars of any kind. Just brotherly love!!! That doesn’t seem like a senecio that would please US, does it? It also doesn’t help Yaboo finding excuses to attack anyone they want in the name of security and “defending themselves”. They truly prefer IRI but one that is scary enough for the region but weak enough that they can’t actually do anything to cause real harm. This isn’t about RP as a leader. They want to keep IRI alive but not well! No matter how much they talk about regime change, that is the last thing they want. If they find a way to keep the region nervous and unsafe, they will continue with whomever they see fit. This has zero to do with Iranian people or anyone else for that matter.

Comments: TRUMP POSTPONES ENERGY ATTACKS, CITING TALKS: President Donald Trump said this morning he was postponing any strikes against Iran's power plants for five days, citing what he said were "productive conversations" with Tehran to end the war. Markets surged and oil prices dropped on the news. TEHRAN DEFIANT: Iran responded by saying there had been no direct talks and Trump's move was designed to lower energy prices and "buy time" for his military plans. Tehran had threatened to strike electricity targets across the region if Trump followed through on his threat to "obliterate" the country's power network unless it opened the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping route by tonight. GLOBAL ENERGY CRISIS: The global economy faces a "major threat" and the current energy crisis is worse than the oil shocks of the 1970s, the International Energy Agency warned. The U.S. moved to ease sanctions on Iranian oil to cool surging prices, but that could be a boon for Tehran. 'ALL OPTIONS ON THE TABLE': Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told NBC News' “Meet the Press” that “all options are on the table” with regard to Kharg Island, including sending U.S. troops to secure the critical Iranian oil production hub. Tehran threatened to mine the “entire Persian Gulf” if invaded. STRIKES ON ISRAEL: More than 180 people were injured in two Iranian missile strikes on southern Israel over the weekend, startling a country that has had comparatively few casualties since it launched the war thanks to its air defenses.

Comments: President Trump said Monday that the United States and Iran were negotiating “a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East” and that he would postpone his deadline for attacking Iranian power plants by five days after the two countries traded threats over the weekend. Iran did not immediately comment. It was unclear what kind of communication might be taking place and who might be mediating; Iran has previously denied seeking a cease-fire. Mr. Trump had threatened on Saturday to bomb Iran’s energy infrastructure within 48 hours unless Iran agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, a critical shipping route for the global oil trade. Mr. Trump did not elaborate on the details of the talks, but analysts have said it is difficult to see a straightforward offramp for the American-Israeli air war with Iran, which began on Feb 28. and has morphed into a wider conflict in the Middle East. Despite Mr. Trump’s calls for the ouster of the Islamic Republic and his vow to help Iranian protesters overthrow their leaders earlier this year, the Iranian government is still very much in place, as is much of its nuclear program.
