Comments: I called the Turkish airline and told them I’ll be using the US to Turkey portion. You are correct, they usually don’t like to do that but due to circumstances, they said fine. Of course, if flights assume to Tehran, I need to buy a separate ticket! At this stage, I’m ok with some extra cost. They also mentioned that there are flights to Tehran via Iranair or the other one called Iranair tour. It might or might not be available but flying as of today, apparently!

If you have a connecting flight from Istanbul and that flight is canceled, Turkish airline will cancel your flight from USA. if you had two separate tickets one to Istanbul and one from Istanbul to Tehran then you can fly to Istanbul.
