Comments: A cease-fire between Israel and Iran appeared to be holding on Tuesday, as Israel’s military lifted emergency restrictions imposed during the conflict and Iran’s president hailed “the end of a 12-day war that was imposed on the Iranian people” in an address to the nation. The nascent truce came hours after President Trump lashed out at both countries for launching attacks after he had announced an end to their brief war. Within hours, however, Mr. Trump had praised both countries for seeking an end to the fighting and taken credit for delivering it. “Both Israel and Iran wanted to stop the War, equally!” Mr. Trump wrote on social media as he flew to a NATO summit in the Netherlands. Referring to U.S. airstrikes over the weekend, he added, “It was my great honor to Destroy All Nuclear facilities & capability, and then, STOP THE WAR!” Earlier, in remarks to reporters punctuated by an expletive, Mr. Trump said he was “not happy” with either side. He sharply criticized Israel for retaliating for an Iranian missile attack “right after we made the deal,” and said that the two adversaries didn’t know what they were doing. On Air Force One, Mr. Trump said he had spoken with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel on Tuesday morning and was “firm and direct” about what needed to happen to sustain the cease-fire. Mr. Netanyahu’s office said that Iran had fired missiles after the cease-fire took effect, and that the Israeli military had retaliated by striking a radar system near Tehran. Iran’s military denied violating the cease-fire, and Mr. Netanyahu’s statement indicated that Israel’s retaliation was limited. Even as Iran and Israel offered competing versions of events, their explanations suggested that the sides — both of which claim to have prevailed in the conflict — want the cease-fire to hold. Here’s what else to know: Global reaction: World leaders greeted the cease-fire announcement with cautious optimism. “If a cease-fire has indeed been achieved, then that can only be welcomed,” said Dmitri S. Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman. President Emmanuel Macron of France praised the announcement but warned that “the situation remains volatile and unstable.” Trading fire: Iran and Israel both mounted attacks overnight, and then presented competing narratives about who was at fault for the back and forth. At least four people were killed when a missile fired from Iran hit an apartment building in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba. In Tehran, residents said they endured a night of the heaviest airstrikes since the war began June 13. War powers: Several top Senate Democrats are pushing for a vote to require congressional approval for any further military action against Iran, and are even proposing to narrow the measure to draw maximum support from a divided party. With Republicans holding majorities in both chambers of Congress, no measure restricting Mr. Trump’s military authority is likely to succeed, but the Democrats’ efforts have reinvigorated a long-dormant debate over Congress’s role in matters of war. Diplomacy: As Qatar and the other Gulf nations watched the war unfold over the past two weeks, they worried that an escalation could result in a widening conflict in which Iran might target their strategic energy resources. So even before Iran fired missiles at a U.S. military installation on its territory on Monday, Qatar engaged quietly with the United States and with the Iranian government to lay the groundwork for a truce. Markets rise: A second day of declining oil prices helped lift stocks on Tuesday as the cease-fire between Israel and Iran began to take hold. The S&P 500 had risen over 1 percent heading into afternoon trading, and now sits less than 1 percent away from its February record high.

Comments: Unfortunately, for Iranian people, nothing positive was achieved! What did Israel accomplish in Iran after 11 days of incessant bombing? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed in his statement acknowledging the ceasefire that the Israeli goals have been achieved. Such an assertion seems problematic, to say the least. At the start of the short-lived war, he declared two goals: “decapitating the nuclear programme” and “regime change”. Was the nuclear programme decapitated? The answer is likely negative. It seems that Iran transported fissionable material out of the Fordow facility attacked by the United States. This stockpile is the most important part of the nuclear programme, so “decapitation” seems to have failed. What damage, if any, did Israel inflict on the Iranian nuclear programme? That is also unclear. Israel managed to persuade the US to attack Iranian nuclear facilities using bunker-busting bombs, Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOPs), but the US did little else to help the Israeli offensive. The extent of destruction would be hard to evaluate since Iran is unlikely to grant outside access. Has Israel generated “regime change” in Iran? The brief answer is that it has very much achieved the opposite. Israel attempted to trigger an uprising against the regime by killing military leaders of Iran’s various security structures. This strategy is based on the firm Israeli belief that the best way to destabilise an enemy is through assassinations of senior leaders. This has never worked. The only possible exception was the effect Hassan Nasrallah’s death had on Hezbollah in Lebanon, but that had a great deal to do with internal Lebanese political dynamics. In all other cases, Israeli assassinations have failed to create any major political change. In the case of Iran, the assassinations rallied the people around the government. Israel assassinated the senior commanders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), perhaps the most powerful element in current Iranian politics, but also one of the most hated by the Iranian public. Regardless, many Iranians who consider themselves staunch opponents of the Islamic Republic and especially of the IRGC found themselves supporting it. Iranians saw Iran in its entirety under attack and not just “the regime”.

Comments: “We basically, we have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f— they’re doing,” Trump told reporters at the White House before taking off for a trip to The Hague for the NATO Summit. In a Truth Social post around the same time, Trump singled out Israel, in a remarkable move for the U.S. president, telling the longtime American ally: “ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!” Trump told reporters at the White House he was going to see if he could “stop it” when asked about the continued attacks lobbed by both sides overnight after parts of the ceasefire were to be put in place. “They [Iran] violated it but Israel violated it too,” Trump said. “Israel, as soon as we made the deal, they came out and they dropped a load of bombs the likes of which I’ve never seen before. The biggest load that we’ve seen. I’m not happy with Israel. When I say okay, now you have 12 hours, you don’t go out in the first hour and just drop everything you have on them. So, I’m not happy with them, I’m not happy with Iran either.”

Comments: President Donald Trump on Monday lashed out at former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for claiming that multiple countries are "ready to directly supply" Iran with nuclear warheads as a result of the U.S. strikes on key Iranian nuclear sites. "Did he really say that or, is it just a figment of my imagination?" Trump said of Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia's security council. "If he did say that, and, if confirmed, please let me know, IMMEDIATELY," he wrote on Truth Social.
Comments: .Trump weighs in: President Donald Trump flashed intense anger Tuesday morning as the ceasefire he brokered between Israel and Iran appeared to grow more fragile. The president said he was unhappy in particular with Israel, who he said quickly violated the truce. • Ceasefire violations alleged: Trump announced a ceasefire late Monday but hours later, Israel accused Iran of violating the terms and vowed to launch fresh strikes on Tehran. Iran denied the allegations. • CNN poll on strikes: Meanwhile, the US president’s decision to launch airstrikes against Iran at the weekend is broadly unpopular with Americans, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS after the strikes.
Comments: Casualties are mounting. In Iran about 750 people have died in the past 12 days. About 1/2 are civilians. ISIS is gaining strength in Iran as the country is losing its ability to fight them. Multiple small attacks by ISIS is reported in southeastern part of Iran. Weakened Iran will lose control of its territory. Damage from all attacks are in $ billions. What did Iranian people gain from all this? Absolutely nothing! |
