This week the White House sent letters to nine universities to propose a “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.” The compact outlines the administration’s demands for universities in order to secure access to federal funding and threatens to withhold funding for institutions that do not comply. The compact requires tuition freezes and caps international student admissions, bans race or sex as factors in admissions and hiring, enforces strict definitions of gender, and prohibits speech that opposes conservative ideas, among other items. The letters were sent to the University of Arizona, Brown University, Dartmouth College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Southern California, the University of Texas at Austin, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Virginia. Gov. Gavin Newsom has warned in a statement that any California university that signs the agreement will lose state funding.
