Wilson has been using adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors in his work for decades. In traditional gene therapy, they act as transporters, carrying the normal version of a gene to a desired cell. “For someone with genetic blindness, we could deliver a gene to the retina. For someone with muscular dystrophy, we could deliver a gene to the muscle,” says Wilson, director of the Gene Therapy Program and the Orphan Disease Center at the Perelman School of Medicine. “A virus is the most efficient way to do this.” Viruses typically shuttle their own genes into the cells and cause a person to get sick, sticking around for as long as those cells do. But what if, rather than leading to illness, these vectors instead brought antibodies that could counter SARS-CoV-2?

Naming the different variants after the country of origin is ok for the use by scientific community but in the hands personalities like Trump has devastating effects. So how do we go by resolving that? By the way your investigative work for the university and the work outside does not present a conflict of interest? I hope not, both are a necessity.

Comments: By the way, the UK novel strain has a new mutation named Pooh :), P681H. This is unique to this strain and SA and Brazil novel strains do not have it. This is also suspected to evade immunity. It is suspected that these immune evading mutants have emerged as a result of antibody treatment in england.
Comments: By the way, I do disagree with not naming the strains after a country for two reasons: 1. Why was it okay to have the name Spanish flu even though the only thing they had done wrong was to do more testing and detect it early. It was actually a strain that came out of england and distributed around the globe by the english on their navy boats. Now that we see another nasty strain come out of england and people have labled it as the UK strain, we object? 2. On science side of things, when we say the UK strain, we know exactly what we are talking about a strain of SARS-CoV-2 that has 9 novel and older mutations. The one from South Africa has 10, and the one from Brazil has 11. It is the combination of thee mutations that makes the strain novel, and not each individual one. So, We still refer to the strains as UK, SA, and Brazil strains.
Comments: Good question Keefer jAn. The phenotypic effect of a variation is usually unclear. With this bug it is always unclear until some experimentation is done on each and the combination of variations. Usually variations do not mean much but in some cases they mean a lot. But with the "Nelly" variation, N501Y, that emerged from England, we know that it provides better affinity for the spike protein to attach to the human cell and enter it. So, with this one we know that it provides for better transmissability. And sure enough, in all three of England, South Africa, and Brazil novel strains, they contain this variation, and the prevalence of this strain doubles each week and has nearly taken over the older strains. The variation Eeek, E484K is suspected to cause immune evasion. This is very bad. It makes the vaccines ineffective. Now in the novel strains in South Africa and Brazil, both Eeek and Nelly are observed. Which makes those strains more transmissible and immune evasive. 
Comments: Faramarz thanks for sharing the Nature article. I think omitting the name of countries from the nomenclature is good. We are too familiar how that simple name calling was used for political purposes by Trump and the like. Educate me please does sequence variation in the spike protein matter in so far as binding to the target cell and the transfer of the genetic material? what do the mutations at different sites of the spike protein signify if anything? Do they prevent the virus' biding ability?

Comments: Faramarz jan only time will tell. A comprehensive collection of data on all known variants, from all labs from all corners of the world needed to subdue this thing. In the meantime personally I don't think the mRNA method is, as you very well know, the only but one approach in the vaccine development, and I am not an expert in immunology.
