Back on Feb. 10th, when we were discussing WC Group predictions and the last remaining UEFA qualifying playoffs games and advancement of teams, I had predicted both Poland and Ukrain to make it to the big dance with the following results: PLAYOFF A Wales over Austria (correct pick) Ukraine over Scotland (in June) Ukraine over Wales (in June) PLAYOFF B Sweden over Czech Republic (correct pick) Poland over Russian (correct pick - Russia disqualified) Poland over Sweden (correct pick) My gut feeling still believes Ukraine advances, especially now with the political will and momentum they have and wanting to make it to WC for their people and country in general. If Ukraine makes it, I predict below final standing for our Group B: England Iran USA Ukraine If Wales makes it: England Iran Wales USA If Scotland makes it: England Iran USA Scotland To be placed second in our group we need prep games with: Canada/Mexico (or both) Croatia Denmark (beat England - so a good gauge) Either of the Irish teams Netherlands (England always struggles against their style of play or similar) Poland (plays similar style as Ukraine or Baltic teams) Austria (played well against Wales (if they make it)) Senegal/Egypt/Morocco (As a 2nd place team in the group we may face Senegal in round of 16) Ecuador/Columbia (need a physical & technically challenging game) Getting 6 out of 9 games will be an excellent preparation plan. Comments: Faramarz JAn, As far as which "Continent" is going to win in Qatar; the odds are in favor of South America and here is why: There have been 21 previous World Cups, starting in 1930 Uruguay. They were held in these continents: - South America - 5 times - Europe - 11 times - North America - 3 times - Africa - 1 time - Asia - 1 time Usually the team from the same continent wins; see below: - South America - 5 times (4 South American winner, and Germans won in Brazil in 2014) - Europe - 11 times (10 European Winners, and Brazil won in Sweden in 1958) However, when the event is taken place in a continent OTHER than Europe or South America, the clear advantage goes to the South American teams; see below: - North America - 3 times (all three were championed by South American teams) - Africa - 1 time (European champion) - Asia - 1 time (South American champion) So, when the WC is in a non-traditional venue, South America has won 4 out of 5 times, with the only exception being Spain winning it in South Africa in 2010. This means that the odds are in favor of South America in Qatar, most likely Argentina in my opinion.
