Euxine Sea) is an enclave body of water but Turkey has been using/or misusing this in their strategic and geopolitical discussions and agreements with NATO and other neighboring countries such as Bulgaria and Romania for more rights as well as logistical and political leverage and importance to the sea. Turkey knows very well that any of the neighboring countries requiring passage to the open seas must go through and connect to the distant waters of the Atlantic Ocean by the Istanbul's strait of Bosporus (which emerges from the sea’s southwestern corner), the Sea of Marmara, the Dardanelles, the Aegean Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. According to Britannica - Black Sea is a remarkable feature because its lower levels are, to all intents and purposes, almost biologically dead—not because of pollution but because of continued weak ventilation of the deep layers. To the countries of the region, the Black Sea has been of immense strategic importance over the centuries; the advent of more-settled conditions has brought its economic importance to the fore. This Ukraine situation goes back to 2005-2007 time frame (couple of years after first Desert Storm against Iraq) when both US and NATO were pushing and courting Poland to expand NATO's reach by deploying Patriot System(s). Since, it has escalated and resulted in Russia taking Crimea in 2014 in which took most of the world by surprise but not West since in private communications Russia had let them know if Poland scenario and plan materializes, they will make good on taking Crimea and further severe moves if there are more provocations from US and NATO. The projection spectrum and equation has drastically changed at this point as it is very clear what Russia intends to do (since abandoning all north Ukraine advancements) and that is to take major chunks of Ukraine's east provinces as well as 3/4 of the South (North Baltic Sea) coast line to merge with Crimea. This will nearly remove NATO's (through Ukraine) direct reach and access to Baltic Sea for any future moves against Russia. Russian is already establishing economic, governmental, and informational control over the occupied Ukrainian territory (soon to be either annexed or given to Russian People’s Republics proxies such as Donetsk and Luhansk (DNR and LNR). This also sends a clear message to Turkey and NATO toying with the idea of allowing Turkey to join. A ploy and game both Turkey and NATO have been at it and coordinating for years now. I think it was Keefer (thank you!) back in February that posted an image from BBC regarding how much of Ukraine does Russia Control. New maps has been released by BBC (or better yet MI6/MoD) war group analysts showing Russia's moves.
