Yes, war is a complete cop out. TM has been playing exactly like this since GruhbAn Ghandali has taken over. There never is a plan. And if I remember correctly, many here predicted this exact scenario after every game his team played. I think they have let at least a goal in, in most (if not in every) game they have played. This is true even against the weakest opponents like Afghanistan.

I’m afraid you are correct. I don’t see how we can get any points from the other teams after watching the defense fail against NZ over and over again.

This might be an excuse used and it is not completely false but the war, the visa issue and the uncertainty about the fans reaction is definitely a factor.

Under the best circumstances, we could get 4 points but this team had zero support. A better coach could have helped. Younger players could have helped.

As of now, I see TM heading home with 1 point and -4 goal difference!

With the tie with the weakest team in the world cup, ghandali sealed the faith of this team. I am going to take a leap of faith and assume that everyone agrees that we will not win any of our next two games. So, with a tie and two losses, or even two ties and a loss, or even in the spectacular miracle of three ties, I do not think we will advance. So, this team is done after a game against the weakest opponent. Reasons are many and you all have alluded to some. I am going to list them here:

1. Coach does not belong. I.e. we have no strategy.
2. This coach does not know how to defend.
3. This coach does not know how to play offensive
4. Players are old
5. midfield is weak/was absent!
6. middle defenders are no good.

Please add to the list, if I have missed any. I would like to propose that all of these are true. But the root cause is all on the #1. I think we will see parking the bus like what he blamed CQ to do in the next two games, except that he wont know how to do that and so it will look like a pig tossing contest where players will always look out of position, late to the ball, and half hearted attempts at blocking shot after shot.

France came alive late in the game and they scored 3 goals. Senegal could have scored more but 3-1 was the final score. I think half of us predicted 3-1!!! We are getting better and better in predicting…

Ramin was clearly the best player for Iran and he got the MOM award even though the NZ player had scored 2 goals.

The main issue for Iran was in the midfield or lack of it. Both Ezat and Ghodos had bad games in allowing NZ too much time on the ball. On the first goal Chris Wood was allowed to stop the ball do a couple of roopaei and then pass the ball.

The starting line up made sense. Moghanlou got the start because of his height and he delivered with his assist on the first goal and his defensive work. Nemati was subpar and I would replace him with Kanani in the next match. Taremi other than his shot that hit the post was selfish with the ball and did not perform as expected. Mohhebi scored and that made up for his mistake on the second goal.

Overall after all the team went through to get to this match from no league games in the past 3 months, no real friendly games and the stupid travel plans they managed to show extraordinary resilience and came back twice in a WC match which is not easy task for any team.

And NZ is not as bad as I thought. They played their hearts out and this draw will give them hope to play even harder and get points off Egypt in the next game which is what we need.

And Asian teams are still undefeated

As far as the game itself I say this was the most entertaining match so far in the tournament. it was end-to-end action for the entire 90 minutes. The final stats says it all

Attempts 17 to 14 for Iran
On Target 8 to 4 for NZ
Off Target 7 to 3 for Iran
Inside the Penalty Area 10-10 tie
Outside the Penalty Area 7 to 4 for Iran

The crowd totally enjoyed the game and after the match they were telling us with our Iran shirts that this was a great game

The attendance was announced as 70,108 people. I say about 5000-7000 were Iranians. But Iran had a lot of support from the neutrals. There were a lot of Mexicans who supported Iran with "olay olay olay olay, Iraaaan....Iraaaan"
