Comments: How Iran pulled off seismic Brazil shockPublished11 Nov 2023 Coach Hossein Abdi, match-winner Esmaeil Gholizadeh and goalkeeper Arsha Shakouri speak to FIFA after incredible 3-2 comeback win.
“Fight, fight and fight again,” was the message IR Iran coach Hossein Abdi delivered during the half-time break of their astonishing FIFA U-17 World Cup™ clash with Brazil on Saturday. His players delivered in spectacular fashion, reversing a 2-0 deficit to record one of the most amazing, and unexpected, successes in the tournament’s history. The Iranians had looked down and out after opening 45 minutes when the South American giants turned on the style in Jakarta, thrilling supporters with their slick passing moves, dazzling footwork and skilful dribbling. Two goals to the good, Brazil looked near-certainties for victory – and a perfect start to the defence of the title they won in 2019. Iran coach Abdi, however, had other ideas and quickly set about reminding his team they had the tools to challenge their illustrious opponents. “In the first half, playing the Brazilians had too much influence on the players," said Abdi. "They were maybe thinking, ‘They are Brazil, we are not…’ At half-time, we spoke with them, we made two changes to the line-up [bringing on Kasra Taheri and Alireza Homaeifard], we pushed them and gave them hope and inspiration. After that, you see what happened.” What unfolded will go down in Iranian football folklore. Yaghoob Barajeh got the ball rolling, Iran’s No9 slotting in just six minutes after the break. The strike galvanised Abdi’s team, who began attacking with greater speed, purpose and belief. By the 69th minute, they were level – substitute Taheri latching on to a pinpoint long pass from goalkeeper Arsha Shakouri and lashing home a powerful first-time shot. “We analysed Brazil and this specific training helped us score the second goal,” revealed Shakouri. Indeed, coach Adbi revealed the extent of their preparations for the game. “In our programme from last month until now, we have been training every day for this match. We know Brazil very well.” Brazil are not likely to forget Iran in a hurry either. The comeback was completed on 73 minutes, when Esmaeil Gholizadeh applied the finishing touch following a superb counter-attack. The goal sparked wild celebrations among his team-mates, the Iran staff, and their buoyant fans at Jakarta International Stadium. “In the second half, we came back thanks to a lot of motivation the head coach gave to us,” said Gholizadeh. “He motivated us to fight. I also thank a lot the fans who gave us a lot of support, too. They helped us to come back in the game and achieve this result.” Brazil piled on the pressure in the game’s final stages but were unable to find an equaliser – in no small part down to Iran goalkeeper Shakouri, who made several fine saves and was awarded the player of the match prize. “Brazil is the biggest team in the world but every player gave their biggest effort and performed to our best,” he added. “I’m so glad to help my team with a great performance. It is an amazing feeling to do this at the biggest competition in the world for our age group. It is a great honour.”
