Trump and White House spokespeople publicly denied that security concerns dictated the change. Trump asserted on Truth Social that the swap was logistically planned so the "magnificent" new Qatari jet could fly ahead to RAF Mildenhall in England to allow U.S. military service members to tour the aircraft. He claimed he chose to take the legacy aircraft out of Turkey simply "for old time's sake".

However, when pressed by reporters about the regional danger, Trump did not dismiss the threat entirely, repeatedly acknowledging that he is "number one on the kill list for Iran".

Once out of the high-risk zone and safely landed in the U.K., Trump switched back to the new Qatari-gifted aircraft for the final leg of his journey back to Washington, D.C.

President Donald Trump switched planes when departing Turkey at the urging of the Secret Service, who recommended using the older, more heavily protected Air Force One as a security precaution amid escalating military tensions with Iran. 

The decision has highlighted contrasting explanations between White House intelligence recommendations and Trump's official public statements. 

While departing the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, the Secret Service and defense officials urged the president to use the older Boeing VC-25A fleet for the high-risk international flight path. The area is within missile range of Iran, and military strikes between the U.S. and Iran had just reignited.
