US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa has hinted at disagreements between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the attacks on Lebanon.

He described the Israeli air strike on Beirut’s suburb and Iran’s missile attack on Israel as a “political message,” adding “we in the United States decided that the confrontation does not expand more”.

Issa met Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and, after the meeting, told reporters Trump follows Lebanon’s news daily, adding in Arabic the US president “almost got into a fight with Netanyahu over Lebanon”.

Trump and Netanyahu’s friendship may be forever damaged by Israel’s repeated bombing in Iran, according Tim Constantine, a writer for the Washington Post newspaper and host of The Capitol Hill Show.

“The frustration in the last three or four days that has been very clear – Trump’s frustration with Israel, with Netanyahu – is unlike anything I’ve seen up to this point,” he told Al Jazeera.

Trump and Netanyahu spoke on Monday and the US president said on social media that “Israel and Iran must immediately stop ‘shooting’.”

“[Trump] may have reached the level of disappointment and frustration that he’s going to a point that he’s not going to return to that same jovial friendship that he’s had in the past,” Constantine said.
