Well, the cat is definitely out of the bag: Gene Drive

We'll have to see where we end up after the sessions tomorrow and on Friday. We have two days to come up with a recommendation! This is one of those situations where I say, I wish I was not here, but if not, someone else would take the spot and might drive it without any conscience.

That is a very scary consequence. I feel very uneasy in a world where one person can change another person's genetics without them knowing it. But if the cat is out of the bag already, I am not sure what the right decision is here but I am sure you will do your best to reach it. My best wishes for you.

Well, I am only one of three experts they have invited. So, it is not entirely up to me. But I am the first reader. So, we'll see how much they will listen to me. But decisions like these are not made based on science. They are political decisions.

The difficulty is that if we decide that the ethics of this are too grave for anyone to do this, the reality is that we are not the only ones doing this. Chinese, the soviets, and even Iran will do this without much ethical considerations. So, it isn't like if we stop this project, the whole branch of science will die. It only means that we may fall behind. Even that is under question because a company can decide to do this without NIH's approval. Money rules here. The basic technology is public and so, any of the actors that I mentioned could, and probably already are, developing this.

The technology can be used in humans as well to gradually wipe out certain traits or even races without anyone knowing, if fallen into the wrong hands.

Holy shit. [rofl] Can that even be done? I did not realize we were even close to doing anything at the planetary scale!! That sucks. I hope you do not let them do this.

Well, they have called a few of us to decide whether NIH should fund a fairly consequential project. Someone wants to reengineer all the mosquitos on the planet. [rofl]

Unfortunately, I am leaving tomorrow. What are you doing at NIH?

Maghsoud, I saw that on local TV. I am here for an NIH visit. But it is not broadcast on nations TV like CNN. How did you find out about it?

There were a number of shootings around the country which is not broadcast. In Washington D.C. three police officers were shot when they tried to do an animal cruelty arrest. But this is not reported as mass shooting because at least three people have to die.

You are lucky Agha Zinsky. I have property but no one that I can trust the power of attorney. So, I have to go there every time. I am looking for a reliable attorney now.

Maghsoud,

Very true. I haven't bought or sold property in Iran in person. My sister has the power of attorney. She does all the hard work!!!

Agha Zinsky, my story is similar. Iown property there as well. I think the big problem with us who there is that the process of selling real estate could take a long time. It will also require you to go there several times in the process. If u can do this, then u will be able to make a lot of money in the process too.

Last time I brought this up, I was attacked and called names that I don't recall (So many names [confused][biggrin][biggrin]!!!).

I have couple of places in Tehran. One is rented and the other one that I bought for mom to live closer to my sister. I can't really check prices, even if I want to, as easily as here but every now and then I get a call from the family renting the place asking me if I want to sell it to them. They give me a price which I assume is 5% or so less than the market value. I have no intention of selling unless I can exchange it with another one in Iran. I have been looking at some properties (villas) near Caspian see. I can probably exchange the 120-meter apartment in Mirdamad with a 450-meter villa and save some for furniture and such.

I would like to spend at least 6 months out of a year in Iran after retirement. Another 5 months in Europe and a month or so in USA. If kids decide to move to Europe permanently, the 1 month in USA will become shorter.

Real estate in Iran is crazy. I was told prices are high but not many buyers. Rent has gone much higher.
