Comments: Israel pounds Iran: Israel launched direct strikes against Iran Saturday morning, in a high-stakes retaliation to Tehran’s ballistic missile barrage earlier this month. The Israeli military said it hit “precise” military targets and an Israeli military source told CNN the strikes did not include energy infrastructure.
• Iran has said it is “entitled” to defend itself following the attacks. Iranian media appears to be downplaying the strikes, saying military sites in three provinces were hit, but damage was “limited.” The army, though, has said two soldiers were killed.
• A senior US administration official said President Biden “encouraged” Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “design” a retaliatory attack against Iran that would “deter future attacks against Israel.” Biden has been urging Netanyahu to make a proportional response.
A host of Arab states have condemned Israel’s strikes on Iran in a sign of concerns over further regional escalation.
Without mentioning Israel by name, the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) foreign ministry “expressed deep concern” over the continued escalation.
Saudi Arabia, a regional powerhouse and a historic foe of Iran, also did not mention Israel but condemned the “military targeting” of Iran as a “violation of its sovereignty” and contravention of international law, according to the state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Qatar and Kuwait separately condemned the Israeli strikes and Egypt expressed deep concern over regional escalation.
Diplomacy at work: US-allied Gulf Arab states like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, two of the world’s top oil producers, have in recent years steered their foreign policies away from conflict to serve their economic interests. This has seen them repair ties with former adversaries like Iran.

Comments: Talked to Iran and no one actually heard anything other than the news. It seems we survived another stupid war game.

Comments: This new staged war that Iran and Israel are playing is crazy. It looks like it is meant for each side's most fanatic supporters. The majority in the middle who knows this is just a show is ignored.
And as for america, they seem to have played their mediator role well to calm the situation. Democrats cannot afford this war.
But as they say here in down under, america seems to have gone tropo. They are about to make trump the president again.

Comments: Salam doostan. I hope everyone and their relatives are safe in iran. Looks like a very mild attack:
What to know- Israel announced that it had launched "precise strikes on military targets in Iran" at 2:30 a.m. local time on Saturday. By about 6:00 a.m., the Israel Defense Forces said the strikes were completed and its "mission was fulfilled."
- The IDF said the three waves of strikes were in response to "months of continuous attacks" from Iran and its regional allies. On Oct. 1, Iran launched a retaliatory barrage of missiles at Israel.
- Iran's National Air Defense headquarters said military facilities were hit in the provinces of Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam. Two soldiers were killed, according to the Iranian army. While explosions could be heard in the capital, Tehran, the city itself was not directly hit.
- There have been no reports of Iranian nuclear facilities or oil fields being hit, targets that the U.S. had previously urged Israel to refrain from striking.
- While the U.S. was given a heads-up about the strikes ahead of time, it was not involved in the action, U.S. defense officials say.
- A senior administration official said tonight's strikes "should be the end of the direct military exchange between Israel and Iran.”
- Secretary of State Antony Blinken finished a diplomatic tour to Israel and Saudi Arabia yesterday, where he attempted to calm spiraling regional tensions and continued to push for a cease-fire between Hamas and Israel.

Comments: Yisrael Ziv, a former head of the IDF’s Operations Directorate, calls the Israeli strikes “historic,” and says Israel has for hours been doing “whatever it wants” in the skies of Iran undetected, targeting some of its most important military targets. "Israel only sent a message on what the eventual retaliation will look like."

Comments: Israel launched a series of airstrikes against Iran on Saturday, the Israeli military said, fulfilling its vow to retaliate for an earlier Iranian attack.
The direct attack raised fears that turbulent conflicts in the Middle East could escalate into an all-out war between Israel and Iran, the region’s two most powerful militaries.
Residents of Tehran reported hearing multiple explosions in and around the Iranian capital, and Iranian state media sites said the explosions were near or at Imam Khomeini international airport.
Maryam Naraghi, an Iranian journalist, said she heard large explosions in the eastern part of Tehran, where she lives. “It was the sound of bombs and explosions,” she said. “It was very close to where I am in the eastern part of the city.” The area includes military bases and the secretive military site Parchin.
Another Iranian journalist, Reza Rashidpour, said five massive explosions were heard in Tehran within about 10 seconds. He said Iranian air force jets had taken off in the western part of the country.
The attack early Saturday was a response to several waves of ballistic missiles that Iran launched at Israel on Oct. 1, which forced millions of Israelis to take cover in bomb shelters but did minimal damage.
Iran said it fired the missiles at Israel in response to Israel killing Hassan Nasrallah, the longtime leader of Hezbollah, and an Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps commander who was with him at the time; and Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader, whose assassination while in Tehran was particularly embarrassing to the regime there.
The recent exchanges between Israel and Iran have bucked both countries’ longstanding practice of avoiding direct military clashes. For years, Israel and Iran have fought each other in a shadow war involving covert operations and armed groups backed by Iran, like Hamas and Hezbollah. But the conflict between the two countries has come out into the open this year and threatens to launch a war that could embroil much of the world.
