I’m missing out because I’m sitting out but can’t help the feeling it could crash soon. I’ve been wrong before and possibly wrong again but for now I’m saving my money.

GameStop, MicroStrategy shares rise after Ryan Cohen posts photo with Michael Saylor

Traders work underneath GameStop Corp. signage on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York, US, on Friday, June 7, 2024. Keith Gill, whose Roaring Kitty online moniker has sent GameStop Corp. shares surging in the past week, sparked another rally in the video-game retailer after a YouTube post said he'd return to the platform Friday for the first time in three years. Faramarz,
That was my point when I said everything is going extreme. It’s either waste to the max or cut everything without any consequences.
Imagine your own family. When money is tight, we all try to cut waste. Smart people find a way to do this by cutting actual waste. Others cut stuff like insurance, healthcare, education, nutrition food and bills that are not negotiable. It works well for a while until things go bad. Someone gets sick and you got no insurance so the cost is going to go to the roof. You cut home repairs or patch it up and pipes blow and the cost is 10 times the cost of basic maintenance.
It always comes back to hunt you later.
Republicans have always wanted government to be gone one way or another. It started with Reagan and continued up to today. They are in war with the government they are elected to serve. They believe private sector is much better equipped to handle this. No question about government waste but when you give power to private sector, they tend to look at the country as a source of income. They do whatever it takes to make money for themselves and that makes the country a victim.

Zinsky, let me describes parallels here:

In 1979, a revolution happened in Iran that was based on all good ideas (in fact many of people's chants were also what Shah was saying to the west long before the revolution). But when the revolution succeeded, the good ideas were used to tear down the country's civic infrastructure and create a network of executives that were selected not based on merit but loyalty, hence introducing an incredible level of corruption into all fabrics of society. The rest is history.

Now fast forward to 2025 and its project. The state of the matter is that both sides of the election have been chanting good ideas but never meaning to actually accomplish them. This DOGE thing that is now created (I am assuming that it is part of Project 2025 in some way) is based on a good idea but one that is hijacked by the current government and the few individuals who are running it.

Let me give you an example that I am intimately familiar with. When we receive grants from the government, attached to it, there is something called the "Indirect". The Indirect is to compensate the institution we are at for the basic infrastructure cost of the government project we are supposed to do. This Indirect rate is negotiated for each institution. Most university's rates are just above 50%. This means that for every $ that I get from the government, the institution gets about 50 cents or so in indirect cost. Where I am at Salk, this rate if 90%. :) This adds up to a lot of money. I was calculating last night that just for my grants, this adds up t about $700K/year for the past 10 years. This is just my grants. The government pays billions in Indirect cost of its projects. But when you look at what the project gets out of it is really minimal: Lab space, some pre and post-award support which is abysmal. I estimate this should not add up to more than $70K/year. But Government is paying 10X that.

So, it makes sense to cut this and everyone (except for the institutions) agree on this. What DOGE has now done is to propose a flat 15% rate for everyone. On paper it sounds nice. But what this is going to do is the following:

1.  Institutions are going to take this to court. They are going to say we cannot operate with this money.

2. Some institutions through back doors will strike deals with Musk and the gang and will continue get funded. The rest will halt research to see the outcome of the courts.

This much is already happening which if it does not end soon, completely destroy the United States' research enterprise. It also is opening the door to backdoor deals and corruption. Instead of a system that was working (however limping) for everyone, it will work for a very select few and without any accountability or accounting of where the money is going.

The important point is that instead of institutionalizing the research enterprise, it is done based on the judgement of a few individuals and based on the relationships. Importantly, the way they are doing this, it will create chaos in all aspects of research and development that has anything to do with the government.

Project 2025 Is in full swing. Musk is looking for any opportunity to make money from any government agencies he is going through. Payment system seems to be the easiest way for him to make massive amounts of money. Very soon, all payments made to or from government will go through his payment system. He can take 2-3% of each transaction for the rest of his life. I’m sure Trump organization will have their hands in the cookie jar as well.
There are seriously stupid people out there who think Trump/Musk are here to help America and Americans. They think all this BS about Woke, DEI, immigration, tariffs and more are the main issues for Trump/Musk. These are just issues they use to flood the airwaves and make supporters happy. It’s all about making money and make it fast.
