Comments: I have no experience in restaurant business. One of my childhood friends started a restaurant in Florida. He was making really good money for a year or so, but his partner started spending less and less and he had to manage it by himself. Unfortunately, he was burned out after 6 months of working from 7:00 AM to midnight, 6 days a week. Slowly but surely, the customer service went down and with it went down the restaurant. As far as getting funding, it is not too bad. That part is not as hard. The only setback is that you will not make all decisions if you get VC money. You will have a boss to report to. If you are looking to expand and willing to put in the work, that is a good option. VCs will help manage the business by getting you the experts in the field to help. Either way, it is all about your vision about the business. If you are looking to run it for a long time (10-15 years), VCs might not be your best bet. If you have a great idea and would like to get it started and grow fast & rather quickly take your profit, VCs are the quickest route to get there. Of course, there are no guarantees in any business.

Comments: Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) has announced private agreements to issue $700.0 million of new 2.25% Convertible Senior Notes due 2028 and amend its existing 0.00% Convertible Senior Notes due 2029. The new notes will bear 2.25% annual interest, while amended notes will carry 3.50% interest. The conversion price for new notes will be set at a 50% premium over the volume-weighted average stock price on February 12, 2025, while amended notes will have a 105% premium. Both transactions are expected to close around February 20, 2025. The company plans to use proceeds for general corporate purposes, including working capital for growth and business expansion. The new notes will mature on July 15, 2028, with potential early redemption after March 1, 2026. Holders can require company repurchase upon fundamental changes at 100% principal plus accrued interest.

Comments: Zinsky, thanks so much. What I have been asked to get involved in is a new restaurant chain. I started one which became successful and now has several dozen branches. We did not go the VC route and I think it was a mistake. This time I want to do it right. I imagine this may be a little different than a tech startup which is probably what you have. I am still thinking about it and am not sure. at this age starting a new venture is a bit crazy. My question is mostly how much time it takes. My experience with the last one was that it takes much too much for my age. But then again may be VC route would make it easier. I don't know.

Comments: Maghsoud, I'll be more than happy to share my experience. The one I was involved with got partial funding and before it needed a full funding, it was sold to another company with the help of the VC. VCs are hard to please but if you can present a good business plan and have the right people in your team, they will bite. We went to 5 different VCs before one agreed to pay the initial funding for a year for us to come up with the proof of concept. That was the hardest part. We worked (Maybe not me but the engineers) 15 hours a day, 6 days a week for 8 months. The one I worked on was regarding the short distance, very high-capacity chipset. It would eliminate the need for HDMI with the same or better quality. One of the guys I worked with had a patent and started the design before we went shopping. We brought in 2 UC professors and a well know tech startup junky as our board of directors. I was mainly the PM for the whole thing, as well as a board member.
